Second Half Goal by (13) Baylor Downs K-State

Oct 19, 2018 | Soccer

WACO, Texas – In yet another match featuring wet conditions, Kansas State pushed (13) Baylor to the brink of an upset but the Bears defended their adopted home field for the evening with a 1-0 win on Friday night. K-State has now lost seven straight.

The match was originally slated to be played at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field, but due to heavy rains in the area during the last week the field was deemed unplayable. Instead, the match was played at Baylor football's Simpson Practice Fields which were also a soggy mess.

"I am proud of what we did tonight against a very physical, strong, organized, powerful team," said head coach Mike Dibbini about the final result. "We just let the ball do the work. I stressed to them if we were going to play this long ball offense with them, this game is going to get out of hand. If we play like we are capable of playing and let the ball do the work and keep the ball moving side to side and look to penetrate with our passes, be composed in the final third and get yourself in between the lines we could equalize this game. I thought we did a really good job."

K-State (4-10-2, 0-7-0 Big 12) opened the match quickly, as Katie Cramer fired a rocket shot towards the upper right corner. Baylor goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt just got her fingertips on the ball and pushed it over the crossbar.

Baylor (13-4-0, 6-1-0) outshot K-State in the opening half, 9-3, including a 5-1 edge in shots on goal but K-State was able to send the match to the half tied at zero. Baylor's top effort of the opening half came on a curving shot from the right side of the net. K-State goalkeeper Emma Malsy tracked the shot and made a diving save with her right hand.

The Bears broke through in the 49th minute, as Camryn Wendlandt raced up the field on a breakaway attempt and fired her shot from inside the K-State penalty area. The goal was the seventh of the season for Wendlandt.

Kansas State dominated possession in the final eight minutes of the match. Cramer danced through the Baylor defense and fired a low dart at the Baylor goal. Wandt again made a diving save on Cramer's shot.

Moments later, K-State drew a foul just outside the box from the left side. Brookelynn Entz attempted the direct kick and curled one towards the far post but Wandt made the save.

Baylor finished the night with a 21-10 advantage in total shots, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. The Bears held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

Kansas State will end the weekend on Sunday at (17) Texas. Match time is set for 1 p.m. Sunday's match is available on the Longhorn Network and on 101.5 KROCK in Manhattan and for free at kstatesports.com.
