K-State Blanks Drake to Improve to 3-0
Aug 23, 2018 | Soccer
MANHATTAN, Kansas – With a second half goal from Katie Cramer, Kansas State registered the first three-match winning streak in program history as the Wildcats defeated Drake on Thursday night, 1-0, at the K-State Soccer Complex.
The teams were scoreless into the 55th minute, but a Drake (1-2-0) foul during a K-State (3-0-0) attack set the Wildcats up for a free kick from the right side of the Bulldogs' goal from 25 yards away.
Cramer stepped forward to take the kick and sent a hard shot skipping across the ground towards the frame. The ball inched past the sprawling Drake goalkeeper, Kelsie Stone, and found the left side of the net.
The goal was the second of the season for Cramer and is a new career-high for a season for the junior forward from Goddard, Kansas. The tally was the first off a free kick for Kansas State since Kim Braddock notched the first in program history against South Dakota on September 25, 2016.
For her career, Cramer has four goals and ranks tied for second in program history. Cramer's 12 career points are also tied for second.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Emma Malsy backstopped the Wildcats to her third straight shutout. Malsy finished with three saves.
This is the first time K-State has registered three consecutive shutouts in program history. Malsy now owns the school record for consecutive shutout minutes at 270:00.
For the night, Kansas State held a 14-5 advantage in total shots including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Drake outpaced K-State in corner kicks, 6-2.
Kansas State will begin its 2018 road schedule next week, as the Wildcats travel to northern California to face (12) Santa Clara on Thursday, August 30, at 9:30 p.m. (CT), and San Jose State on Sunday, September 2, at 2 p.m.(CT). Both matches will be available in Manhattan on 101.5 KROCK and for free at kstatesports.com.
What They Said
Kansas State Head Coach Mike Dibbini
On the performance of the reserves…
"It is just great to have our subs in the position they are in terms of being ready to respond at any time. They did a great job tonight. We have 22 to 24 players that could start for us at any given moment. It is really hard to say they are subs because they can give us an impact right away. We saw that tonight."
On Katie Cramer's Goal…
"We were measuring it up and she looked over at me and I said take the shot and hopefully we will get something. She looked at me and said low and hard and I said exactly. It worked and it was effective. It was a great shot. I think she placed it in the corner to get a rebound but it went into the back of the net."
Junior Forward Katie Cramer
On the game winning goal…
"The main thing for me was confidence. I looked at Coach (Mike Dibbini) and said I want this shot. I just knew I was confident in myself. I just wanted it so bad and I think that helped me out a lot. I had the shot. I got to use it and it paid off."
Drake Head Coach Lindsey Horner
Overall thoughts on the game...
"I thought we were disciplined defensively. We kind of baited them into certain areas or into a longer ball that after the first 5-7 minutes we did a good job of handling. I think we cause K-State a problem in their attack in terms of something they couldn't solve right away, but ultimately they did with a restart. But I was pleased. We have a very young team and I was just pleased with how disciplined we were."
On what they can take from this game as they continue the season...
"We have been working on building out of the back and we gave K-State the ball away and as soon as we won the ball we had to counter. We started to put our foot on the ball and build and we did a much better job on that until we got fatigued at the end. But we are constantly getting better at playing out of the back and putting our attacking players into the spot where they can be dangerous."
