K-State Win Streak Ended at Three

Aug 31, 2018 | Soccer

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Playing its first road match against a ranked opponent, Kansas State came up short in its upset attempt, 2-0, at ninth-ranked Santa Clara on Thursday night at Stevens Stadium. The loss snapped a three-match winning streak to open the season for the Wildcats.

"They executed the game plan and they generated some solid chances," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini. "That was a really good team there. We have nothing to hang our heads about tonight. We did some positive things against a solid opponent. This game was a tough loss for us, but it also builds us and builds our character going forward."

K-State (3-1-0) registered its first chance of the night in the fourth minute, as Katie Cramer intercepted a ball at midfield. Cramer proceeded to drive through the Santa Clara defense and fired off a shot from 20 yards that was saved on a diving effort from Melissa Lowder.

After a pair of saves from Emma Malsy in the first 18 minutes of the match, Santa Clara (4-0-0) received a call in the penalty area on K-State awarding the Broncos a penalty kick. Maria Sanchez, a member of the 2015 Mexico World Cup squad, finished the kick into the lower right corner of the frame just under Malsy's diving attempt, putting Santa Clara ahead 1-0 in the 19th minute.

The goal halted K-State's scoreless streak to begin the season at 288:23. The Wildcats were the last team to concede a goal this season among Big 12 programs. Malsy finished the night with a career-high seven saves.

The Wildcats nearly knotted the match before halftime. Tatum Wagner chased down a lead pass from Hannah Davis all the way to the touch line. Wagner sent a quick cross towards the 18-yard box. Brookelynn Entz raced to meet the pass and got just a toe on the ball as Lowder deflected the attempt back into the field of play.

At the half, Santa Clara held a 13-4 lead in total shots, but only a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. The Broncos registered a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Wagner provided a jolt of excitement for K-State in the 56th minute. She gathered in a pass and maneuvered between several Santa Clara defenders. She fired a shot towards the net from 12 yards in between two Bronco defenders but was saved by a diving Lowder.

In the 73rd minute, Santa Clara added an insurance goal on a rebound. K-State defended the first shot off a Santa Clara free kick from 15 yards away. The second shot was deflected by Malsy, but the third chance fell at the feet of Kelsey Turnbow who finished into the open frame amongst the scrum.

For the night, the Broncos tallied a 21-8 advantage in total shots including a 10-6 edge in shots on goal. Santa Clara carded a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Kansas State will end its two-match swing through northern California on Sunday, September 2, at San Jose State. First kick on Sunday is at 2 p.m. (CT). The match will be available on 101.5 KROCK in Manhattan and for free at kstatesports.com.
