K-State Ends Road Trip with Draw at San Jose State
Sep 02, 2018 | Soccer
SAN JOSE, Calif. – Kansas State looked to end the road trip to northern California on a high note and tallied a scoreless draw on Sunday afternoon at San Jose State. The Wildcats are now 3-1-1, while San Jose State falls to 0-2-2. This was the fourth shutout of the season for K-State.
"We had some good missed opportunities to get the result," said head coach Mike Dibbini. "We also got lucky and dodged some bullets. We showed some character today. The biggest positive is we got another shutout. That was a good team and they are very stingy. They are athletic in certain areas and challenged us."
After two chances in the first 10 minutes by Tatum Wagner, K-State forced itself into the box in the 28th minute. San Jose State stopped the attack but was whistled for a hand ball in the 18-yard box. Katie Cramer stepped forward to take the ensuing penalty kick but the attempt went outside the left post and kept the match scoreless.
The Spartans registered a 10-7 edge in total shots in the first half, but the teams were equal in shots on goal at two apiece. K-State's Wagner, Christina Baxter and Cramer paced the Wildcats with two shots each.
Kansas State started the second half quickly, as Wagner fired a shot on goal from inside the 18-yard box but San Jose State made the save to keep the match tied. K-State tallied a 5-3 edge in total shots in the second half.
In the first overtime session, K-State goalkeeper Emma Malsy made a crucial save to preserve the shutout. San Jose State took a free kick from distance. The ball was deflected, but Malsy made a diving save at the left post.
K-State countered a minute later, as Wagner dropped off a ball for Brookelynn Entz. Entz sent a curving rocket towards the upper left corner. San Jose State goalkeeper Paige Simoneau got a finger tip on the ball and pushed it over the crossbar.
In the second overtime sessions, neither team was able to develop a solid chance.
The shutout for Malsy was her fourth this season and improved upon her career-high for a single season. Dibbini has been happy with the defensive backline's performance this season with four shutouts.
"They have done a nice job. We are plugging up the holes. If teams want to score on us they have to go around us or they have to score from distance."
San Jose State tallied a 20-15 edge in total shots, but the teams were equal in shots on goal at six each. The Spartans registered an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
