K-State Grabs Early Lead; Falls in Second Half
Sep 07, 2018 | Soccer
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first 10 minutes of the match on Friday night at the K-State Soccer Complex, but UMKC chipped away at the K-State lead and downed the Wildcats with a pair of second half goals.
Kansas State (3-2-1) held a 2-1 lead at halftime, as the Wildcats capitalized on a pair of UMKC turnovers in the opening 10 minutes. K-State's first goal came just 18 seconds into the match, as Katie Cramer intercepted a Kangaroo pass. Cramer then found Brookelynn Entz on the left side of the formation. Entz evaded one defender and finished her shot from 14 yards into the lower right corner of the net.
The goal by Entz was the fastest in school history, surpassing Haley Sutter's goal in 1:03 at Little Rock on September 11, 2016. It was Entz's first goal of the season and the sixth of her career.
In the eighth minute, Cramer intercepted another pass in the UMKC end. This time Cramer found Tatum Wagner rushing towards the Kangaroo frame. Wagner took one dribble around UMKC goalkeeper Afton Fennewald and finished into the wide-open net. The goal was the first of the season for Wagner and improved her K-State career total to five goals.
UMKC (5-2-0) was able to pull within one in the 27th minute. Lexie Howard registered a steal near midfield and sent a ball towards the K-State net. UMKC's leading scorer and one of the nation's top goal scorers, Kelsey Mothershead settled under the pass and sent her shot in from 12 yards.
In the 49th minute, K-State goalkeeper Emma Malsy made a diving save on a Howard shot attempt. K-State attempted to clear the ball, but Mothershead gathered the short clearance at the top of the 18-yard box and finished into the wide-open frame.
The Kangaroos went in front just three minutes later on a 3-on-1 breakaway. The Wildcats pushed numbers forward on a free kick in the UMKC end of the field. As the ball was deflected and cleared, UMKC was able to send three up the field. Howard found Mothershead open on the right side of the field and she quickly finished from just inside K-State's 18-yard box. This was the first hat trick by a K-State opponent in the Wildcats' brief history.
K-State had a pair of chances in the latter stages of the match, but were unable to get an attempt past Fennewald who finished with six saves.
For the night, UMKC edged K-State in total shots, 20-19, but the teams were tied in shots on goal with eight apiece. K-State recorded a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Kansas State will end the weekend with its first match against a Big Ten Conference opponent, as the Wildcats travel to Bloomington, Indiana, to face Indiana on Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT). Sunday's match will be broadcast on Big Ten Plus and a subscription to the service is required. The match will also be broadcast in Manhattan on 101.5 KROCK and for free at kstatesports.com.
What They Said
K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini
On the team's overall performance...
"We got complacent after we scored our two goals, and a team like UMKC especially when they have attack minded players and good front runners, you can't fall asleep and take that foot off the gas, which we did. We got comfortable. They pushed us for our mistakes and they punished us for the rest of the match."
On what contributed to the loss against UMKC...
"We were in control the first 10 minutes, then they obviously took the momentum away from scoring a quick goal. Going into the second half, they wanted it more than us and to be honest they deserved it more than us today, the way we didn't compete today. You started seeing us be a little bit more competitive, but at the end of the game we were chasing the game. They clearly outworked us tonight and they deserve it."
On the momentum of the first 10 minutes...
"It was a great start. Almost too soon. It was just one of those moments where we scored two quick goals. We had never been in that position before. And like I said it was a comfort mentality and complacency that we just all of a sudden turned it off. With a team like that, you can't do that."
Senior forward Tatum Wagner
On her performance tonight against UMKC...
"I think that the first 10 minutes we were just on top of it, and then we kind of thought that the game was over. I think it got better, but then we just let it get away from us."
On what led to the eventual loss...
"I think we came out strong, that's the main point. The coaches always say to come out strong and pressing and we just took our foot off the pedal and let them come back."
On what she plans to work on before Indiana...
"(Assistant coach) Gabe (Romo) told us that we need to work harder in practice because today it just showed that we aren't really challenging each other as much as we should be. I think we just need to forget about this game and focus on Indiana, because we are definitely going to have to come out and play the whole 90 minutes. This is definitely a hard loss and I think we just need to put this all behind us."
UMKC Head Coach Chris Cissell
On overcoming an early 2-0 deficit…
"I was just so disappointed in the way we started. We actually gave them a goal 18 seconds into the match which is obviously the fastest goal we've ever given up. Probably the fastest goal I've given up in my 20-year history as a coach. And then we gave up a second one that we thought was a mistake that we made seven minutes later. So I'm unbelievably proud of the character and integrity that our team showed. It would've been very easy to be on the road against a Big 12 team and against a great team like K-State and be down 2-0 after 7 minutes and to give up. And I knew we were going to fight back and when we made it 2-1 at halftime, we made a couple adjustments and we really believed at halftime that we could come out and not just tie the game but come back and win. So, I mean, I'm extremely proud of the girls because I mean we beat a great Kansas State team here on the road. That's an unbelievable win for our program."
On the progress K-State's soccer program has made since 2016…
"They just keep getting better and better every season and I feel like they're recruiting each season, they continue to bring in great players. And obviously, we know what facilities are coming here and so we know it's going to be really difficult for us to continue to try to recruit against them. So now, at least to be able to say that we came here and got a win, I think should help everybody to realize how good our program is too."
