K-State Stunned in Second Half by Missouri State
Sep 14, 2018 | Soccer
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State controlled the action for a majority of the match against Missouri State on Friday night, but the Bears put in a header off a corner in the second half to stun the Wildcats with a 1-0 win at the K-State Soccer Complex.
K-State (3-3-2) tallied a 23-2 total shot advantage which included a 9-1 edge in shots on goal, but Missouri State (6-4-0) made its one shot on goal count. The 23 shots for K-State were the second-most of the season, trailing the season-high of 27 against Oakland on August 19.
In the 63rd minute, the Bears were awarded the only corner kick for either team in the second half. Jacqueline Baetz put her foot into the ball and found the head of Brittney Robinson inside the six-yard box. Robinson redirected the ball in between the hands of K-State goalkeeper Emma Malsy for the lone goal of the match.
K-State had a pair of late attempts to even the match. Brookelynn Entz sent a blistering free kick attempt from 30 yards out in the center of the field. Missouri State goalkeeper Kaitlin Maxwell pushed the ball into the crossbar and the Wildcats were unable to nudge in the rebound. Maxwell finished with nine saves.
In the final moments of the match, Morgan Egan crossed a ball into the Missouri State 18-yard box. Egan's pass fell at the foot of Entz just outside the left post. Entz was unable to get the ball into the net as time expired. Entz finished the night with a team-high eight shot attempts, including three on goal.
Kansas State will end its regular season non-conference schedule on Sunday, as the Wildcats travel to face Tulsa for a 2 p.m., kickoff. Sunday's match will be broadcast online at HurricaneVision (subscription required). The match will also be available on 101.5 KROCK in Manhattan and for free at kstatesports.com.
What They Said
K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini
On how the game went...
"It's a stinger, it's a cruel game. Today showed why. We dominated the game, we played a pretty decent game. We just couldn't execute our chances. They punished us."
On coming back from halftime...
"We gave away a set piece. We talked about it at halftime and said that the only way they're going to get away is on a set piece, and they did. One careless mistake, we gave them a corner and they punished us for it."
On what K-State did well defensively...
"I thought that realistically they didn't have too much pressure. They had a lot of time with the ball, so on the defensive side of things, the only thing they needed to worry about was defending set pieces. Obviously, we gave one away."
On what they lacked at the end of the match...
"It's difficult to score from range against a team that's kind of sitting in a little bit. You have to figure out ways to get behind. We just weren't creative enough in the final third."
On what was difficult against Missouri State...
"Their defensive compactness was very difficult. So we had more chances in the first half rather than the second half with a sad end."
Sophomore Midfielder Brookelynn Entz
On Missouri State getting one goal to seal the win...
"It's just the most disappointing loss this season. Even surpassing UMKC last weekend. They had two shots on goal, that's all they had. And, they executed one chance, we didn't execute any and they won the game. We should've got some more shots on goal, we should've scored."
On the 23 shots...
"Now that I think back to the opportunities that I had I definitely feel like I should have put some away, now I need to execute better. That's definitely something that I'm going to be working on, which is my finishing."
On her last minute efforts...
"I just wanted to win the game. I did not want to lose to them. Obviously we were the better team. I felt like we dominated the game and we shouldn't have lost."
On the her last shot before the end of the match...
"I honestly thought that it was going to go in. The keeper made a good save but you could just see my reaction when I was lying on the ground."
On not getting the win despite their efforts...
"It does sting, one team can dominate the game and not win because they didn't score any goals. Then the other team gets one chance and they just put it away, that's how it goes and that's how it went today. So, I'm really disappointed with how it went today and how we didn't execute our chances today."
On the importance of going into Big 12 play with another win...
"It's hard for us to go into Big 12 play with three wins, but we do have a game against Tulsa on Sunday. We have to get a win there. We just have to before we go into Big 12. I mean, the Big 12 is tough, every single game is. We need to go into it with at least a little bit of confidence. I think that's something that's going to help, we've been dominating the games but we just can't put away the game."
Missouri State Head Coach Rob Brewer
Thoughts on the game and the difference in the shots on goal...
"I cant tell you how you win a game with one shot but I will take it. K-State has a good team. They're organized, athletic and they have a good front line. We had outstanding goalkeeping that's the only fair answer to give you. We have a pretty good back line and we got our chance and it was a center back who made the goal. But I am not going to take any credit away from K-State they are a good team."
