Entz Scores Two, as K-State Captures Second Big 12 Win of 2020
Oct 30, 2020 | Soccer
AMES, Iowa – For the first time in program history, K-State soccer has registered two wins in Big 12 Conference action as the Wildcats downed Iowa State, 2-0, behind a pair of goals from senior Brookelynn Entz on Friday night at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
The win improved K-State's record to 2-6-0, while Iowa State falls to 2-6-0. The win snapped a 14-match road losing streak in Big 12 action for the Wildcats and was the first road win of any kind for K-State since September 16, 2018 at Tulsa.
"This was a game we needed to break our road curse," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini. "We took another step in our maturation. They executed the game plan by pressing the ball, going backwards to the keeper or otherwise just stayed in home shape. This program turned the page tonight by earning three more points. Baby steps in the process."
Entz echoed the sentiments of Dibbini in the team turning a page.
"This road win is everything for us. Coach (Dibbini) has been telling us all week that we need to turn the page by getting a win on the road."
In the 35th minute a unique play happened in favor of Iowa State. K-State defender Shae Turner played the ball back to K-State goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer. The ball appeared to clip the shin of a Cyclone attacker, so Werremeyer picked up the orb. The official immediately whistled and ruled that Werremeyer had picked up a direct pass back.
Iowa State was awarded an indirect free kick at the top of the 6-yard box. All 11 K-State players lined themselves along the goal line. At Iowa State's first touch, K-State rushed the oncoming shot and blocked the attempt away to keep the match scoreless.
"We just wanted to put everyone on the goal and give Alaina space to come off the line on first touch and block the ball with her hands," said Dibbini about the strategy behind the indirect free kick stop by the Wildcats.
The Cyclones would end the first half with a 7-6 edge in total shots and a 2-1 lead in shots on goal.
In the 52nd minute, K-State's defensive pressure led to the first goal of the match. Iowa State attempted to clear the ball from their own end and away from K-State's pressure but sent the ball directly to Turner at midfield. Turner immediately played the ball over the drawn in Iowa State defense and found Entz on the other end. Entz calmy finished past Iowa State goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz.
"The first goal, I honestly wasn't thinking at all," Entz said on her one-on-one with the Iowa State keeper. "I just saw the ball coming and I kept myself really calm and all I had to do was place it in the corner. The ball from Shae was absolutely perfect. All I had to do was tuck it away."
With her goal, Entz boosted her season total to four and improved her school record for career goals to 14. She broke her own school record for goals in a Big 12 season, with her fourth goal this season. She also improved her school record for career points with 35.
Entz provided K-State with an insurance goal in the 78th minute. Entz gathered a long pass and carried the ball into the 18-yard box. She stopped on a dime, as the Iowa State defender fell down. She then fired with her left foot from 16 yards through the fingers of Silkowitz.
"I think on my second goal I should have had a better shot and placed it in the corner but it worked out and it went in," said Entz about her brace. "You get lucky sometimes and I guess tonight was just that type of night."
This was the third career multi-goal game for Entz, with her last multi-goal game coming against Iowa State at Buser Family Park on October 11, 2019. She is the only player in program history to have two or more multi-goal games to her credit.
"Entz lifted us in the second half," stated Dibbini. "She has that ability and tonight elevated her game to the next level."
The freshman goalkeeper Werremeyer tallied her second shutout win of the season. The product of Blue Springs, Missouri, pocketed six saves. She is the third player in program history with two or more career shutouts.
Iowa State finished with a 20-10 advantage in total shots and a 6-3 lead in shots on goal. The Cyclones also tallied an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
K-State will close out the fall 2020 season with its first-ever match in the month of November.
