K-State Drops Home Finale to Iowa State
Apr 10, 2021 | Soccer
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Playing its final home match of the divided 2020 schedule, K-State was unable to solve the Iowa State defense as the Cyclones tallied a 1-0 win on Saturday at Buser Family Park.
"They were a lot more aggressive than us today," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini about Saturday's result. "When you look at the foul count here you could tell that their mindset and their urgency and their aggressiveness was disruptive to what we were trying to do. We didn't compete for the 90 minutes like we are capable of doing. It just looked like we were very reactive today. We couldn't get going like we normally were going in the last three games. It's really disappointing but we've just got to figure out a way to rebound and get back into it next weekend."
Iowa State (3-6-4) registered the only goal of the match in the 13th minute. Tavin Hays attempted a shot in a one-on-one scenario, which was blocked by K-State goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer.Â
Hays deflected the ball towards the K-State net, but Shannon Dukes cleared the attempt off the line. Dukes' clearance, however, ricocheted off of Hays and into the open net.
"It was a slip through ball," said Werremeyer about the Cyclone tally. "They are really good at those, that's what they were looking for all game. I got out and got as big as I could and it deflected off of me and right back to her right where she needed it at her feet. And then the same thing happened with Shannon (Dukes). It was unfortunate but her work ethic was good."
K-State (3-8-2) registered seven shots on the afternoon, with six coming in the first half with the north wind at their backs. The Wildcats put four on frame, including a pair from Bailey Nemechek. Werremeyer ended the match with six saves, her fourth match this season with five or more saves.
The Wildcats will conclude the 2020 schedule on Saturday, April 17, as the Wildcats travel to Norman, Oklahoma, to face Oklahoma at 1 p.m.
What They Said
MIKE DIBBINI, HEAD COACH
On the impact of Iowa State's first half goal…
"At this level it's a major factor. They were a lot more aggressive than us. Looking at the foul count here you could tell that their mindset and their urgency and their aggressiveness was disruptive to what we are trying to do. We didn't compete for the 90 minutes like we are capable of doing. Just looked like we were very reactive today. Couldn't get going like we normally were going in the last three games. It's really disappointing but we've just got to figure out a way to rebound and get back into it next weekend."
On the performance of Alaina Werremeyer…
"She did a good job. She kept us in the game for the most part. It was unfortunate with that one goal. They outworked us in areas and Alaina was really good in goal, holding steady for us and keeping the ball out of the net until we can try to make some adjustments."
On any extra energy in the second half…
"A little bit, spurts. It wasn't exactly the same energy we've had in the past so a little unfortunate for us. A little disappointing. I just feel like if we had that little step or that spunk in us. We needed one. We needed an equalizer to give us more energy and we just didn't have it today."
BROOKELYNN ENTZ, SENIOR MIDFIELDER
On trying to tie the game in the second half...
"Our talk at halftime was to just have energy because we felt like we came out flat. They controlled the pace of the game and we thought that that goal showed exactly how they were controlling the game. So, we just wanted to come out with energy and try to get that tying goal, kind of like we did against Mizzou. We were close but we didn't get there."
On slowing down the Iowa State offense...
"I think just knowing our defensive alignments. I think we were just a bit disorganized. I don't really know what it was. And I think we just need to bring the energy. I think that was the major thing today.
On the disappointing home loss…
"Yeah we obviously want to do well for our fans. They come out. We haven't been able to do that for them this spring and hopefully we can do that in the fall."
MADDIE WEICHEL, FRESHMAN FORWARD
On her missed shot attempt...
"Yeah I saw, they kept telling me to play the long ball over the top like that would work. I tried to make that run and I just wanted to try and get it but they called me offsides."
On the home crowd this season…
"It's been really fun because with my experience from high school to here it's been, even with the COVID and everything, there are still more fans here and the atmosphere is definitely one to remember. It makes it that much more enjoyable.'
On Brookelynn Entz…
"She's been a huge role model for our team. She impacts the team in crazy ways off the field, on the field, and everything. She will be a huge loss for the team and we'll try and remember her and use what we've learned from her as a team."Â
ALAINA WERREMEYER, FRESHMAN GOALKEEPER
On the one goal from Iowa State…
"It was a slip through ball. They are really good at those, that's what they were looking for all game. On the amount of Iowa State shots…
"I won't say I love being busy but it is what we train for. It was an enjoyable game, definitely intense and it's kind of like a rivalry and we want to win this one."
