K-State Closes Out Exhibition Action with Late Draw

Aug 15, 2021 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Trailing with under seven minutes remaining, K-State pushed forward with a late attack and Aliyah El-Naggar netted the equalizer to help the Wildcats end the exhibition schedule with a 1-1 tie against Wyoming on Sunday afternoon at Buser Family Park.

The match ended after regulation with no overtime sessions being played, which was agreed upon before the start of the match by the two coaching staffs.

"When you're chasing the game, you're a little bit more aggressive in attack," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini on the late goal from El-Naggar. "That's what we saw from our team, we took a little bit more risk and went at them more."

In the 83rd minute, Marisa Weichel gathered a Wyoming turnover just passed midfield. Weichel charged toward the Cowgirl net and found El-Naggar crashing from her right. El-Naggar unleashed a left footed shot that found the upper left corner to square the match, with El-Naggar laying on the grass in celebration.

"Marisa played an awesome ball through and I was a little bit late to the run at first but I was like 'you know what, we've got 10 minutes left in the game I might as well go full out and see where it is,' said El-Naggar about her decision to attack. "I was a little nervous because she hit the back of my foot, and I was like, 'I'm either going to fall or I'm going to shoot the ball.' I just tried shooting it and actually thought I missed the goal, but it gladly went in and just felt great for our team to get that goal."

During the spring portion of the 2020 season, El-Naggar scored the game-tying goal at Missouri with just 28 seconds remaining. El-Naggar felt she owed it to her team to keep attacking late in the match.

"I just want to do it for my team. I care so much for them. I would do anything for them. And although at one point in time I was seeing stars while I was running, I was like you know what, they worked their butts off for me so I want to work it off for them."

Wyoming took the early lead in the 65th minute. Alyssa Bedard received a ball from Camille Hawley. Bedard finished her attempt in the lower left corner.

The Wildcats ended the afternoon with a 19-4 advantage in total shots and an 11-2 lead in shots on goal. Wyoming goalkeeper Alex Daws made 10 saves. K-State registered a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

K-State opens its 2021 season on Thursday, August 19, as the Wildcats host Weber State at 7 p.m. K-State students will receive free pizza and ice cream, while fans can pick up the 2021 K-State Soccer poster.
