K-State Downed by Indiana on Sunday Night
Sep 12, 2021 | Soccer
MANHATTAN, Kansas – K-State looked to claw back from a first half deficit to spring the upset on Indiana on Sunday night at Buser Family Park, but the Hoosiers held back the Wildcats with a 3-0 win.
"The game needs to be played for 90 minutes," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini about Sunday's result. "We showed we can compete in the second half but can we do it for longer periods of time. I don't know if we were mentally as prepared in the first half. They understand this game is tough, right. We've got to have a mental edge more from the beginning.""
K-State (4-4-0) trailed 3-0 after the first 45 minutes, but had the wind at their backs in the second half. With the help of six corner kicks in the second half, K-State was able to threaten with junior defender Jesse Loren in the attack.
On a corner kick from freshman Katy Coffin in the 70th minute, the ball fell to the turf at five yards in the middle of the field. Loren pounced and was able to tap the ball with her foot, but Indiana goalkeeper Jamie Gerstenberg made the save.
In the 80th minute and the 85th minute, Loren got her head on a pair of corner kicks but the Gerstenberg made the save both times. Loren finished the night with a career-high three shots on goal and tied her career-high for shots with three.
"She's a beast in the air," said Dibbini about the product of Redondo Beach, California. "She does a really nice job of winning balls out of the air. She's tough. She's got some experience. We're lucky to have her and we just need to continue to grow as a team and be prepared for the next match."
Indiana (6-1-1) opened the scoring in the fifth minute. The Hoosiers crossed a ball in front of the K-State goal mouth and Anna Bennett tapped it in from four yards for the early 1-0 advantage.
The Hoosiers then added a pair of goals from near midfield to increase its lead to 3-0. Indiana added its second goal in the 36th minute, as Avery Lockwood collected a goal kick and then fired the shot from just steps from the center circle. In the 45 minute, Jen Blitchok gathered the ball from a couple steps behind Lockwood's shot and fired her own from long range, scoring in the upper left corner.
For the night, Indiana held a 14-7 edge in total shots and 7-4 lead in shots on goal. K-State had the advantage in corner kicks, 8-4.

On the second half adjustments...
"I think you hit on a spot out of possession. In the first half they had some goals that were not expected from distance and caught us off guard. We made some mistakes and they punished us for them. I felt like in possession, we did a good job in the first half but they punished us out of possession, because of some defensive lapses. In the second half we were more aggressive in the attack and we were more aggressive physically and metnally. So I think we needed to respond to these and get something out of this. It was a tale of two halves they got us in the first half and even though we didn't get any goals, I felt like we had a lot more opportunities with corner kicks and getting shots off."
On Jesse Loren's performance…
"She's a beast in the air. She does a really nice job of winning balls out of the air. She's tough. She's got some experience. We're lucky to have her and we just need to continue to grow as a team and be prepared for the next match."
