Track and Field Enjoys Solid Weekend at Multiple Meets

AUSTIN, Texas – The Kansas State track and field team had a busy weekend as they competed in three separate meets on Saturday (March 26). The Wildcats made appearances at the Texas Relays, Bobcat Invitational and ESU Relays.
 
"Certainly, we had some really fine performances and good success with the relays in general and the field events I mentioned yesterday," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "The good thing is that our long sprinters and distance crew got a huge number if high quality efforts in over the weekend. Great training for us for the long run. The week off gives us an opportunity to get some folks healthier and to train without interruption for a couple of weeks."
 
Texas Relays
It was a great start to the day with the women's 4x800-meter relay at the Texas Relays. The squad, consisting of fifth year senior Macy Heinz, junior Sydney Burton, senior Alex Ferguson and junior Kassidy Johnson, clocked in at 8:35.71 and finished in second place.
 
Also placing second in their respective event was junior Hadley Splechter. The Yates Center, Kansas native recorded a time of 4:07.45 in the men's mile invitational.
 
Rounding out the Wildcats at the Texas Relays was the women's 4x400-meter relay finals. The relay team was made up of junior O'shalia Johnson, junior Shalysa Wray, fifth year senior Wurrie Njadoe and Ferguson. Coming in at second place, the crew ran a time of 3:36.75.
 
Bobcat Invitational
Burton had a quick turnaround as she traveled to Texas State to compete in the women's 800-meter run shortly after finishing at the Texas Relays. Burton was able to finish fifth overall out of 46 competitors and earn a time of 2:12.94.
 
Placing second overall in the men's 800-meter run was fifth-year senior Travis Hodge with a time of 1:51.03. He was followed by sophomore Will Carroll in 12th (1:53.82), junior Kyle Johnston in 13th (1:54.00) and sophomore Jack Vincent in 18th (1:54.81).
 
ESU Relays
With a personal-best throw of 16.23m/53-3, freshman Darius O'Connell led the way for K-State in the men's shot put and finished in third place at the ESU Relays. Close behind O'Connell was sophomore Jackson Gibbon in sixth place with a personal-best throw of 15.78m/51-9.25.
 
In the women's discus throw, sophomore Emily Fuhr had a heave of 42.88m/140-08 and allowed her to place fifth.
 
Sophomore Ryan Derry ran a personal-best time of 1:54.84 in the men's 800-meter run. His time put him in seventh.
 
K-State will take a week off and prepare for the Jim Click Shootout hosted by Arizona in Tucson, Ariz. The meet will span over three days beginning on Thursday (April 7) and concluding on Saturday (April 9).
