51 Track and Field Athletes Named to Academic All-Big 12 Teams

MANHATTAN, Kan. – A total of 51 members of the Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams were named to the 2022 Academic All-Big 12 teams, the conference announced Tuesday (May 3).
The men's team tied Kansas for the conference lead with 23 honorees apiece, including 20 First Team recipients and three Second Team recipients for the Wildcats. The women's team collected 28 total selections with 17 on First Team and three on Second Team. Oklahoma led the women's selection with 29.
Six Wildcats achieved a 4.0 grade point average during the 2021-22 academic year, including Sydney Burton, Emily Fuhr, Helen Giefer, Macy Heinz, Kassidy Johnson and Brian Simon. Johnson has posted a 4.0 GPA for the last four seasons, while Burton has had a 4.0 GPA for the last two seasons.
Senior Tejaswin Shankar earned his fourth Academic All-Big 12 honor in his career.
To qualify for Academic All-Big 12 honors, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshman and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Seniors who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
Those who earned spots on the conference's academic first team put together an overall GPA of 3.20 or higher.
K-State will host the Ward Haylett Invitational on Friday (May 6) and Saturday (May 7). The meet will take place at the R.V. Christian Track and will mark as Senior Day. Competition will commence on Friday at 6 p.m., CT with the women's javelin throw and Saturday's events will take place at 10 a.m., CT with the women's high jump.
