Late Goal Sinks K-State on Thursday

Oct 12, 2023 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – K-State matched up against West Virginia on Thursday night at Buser Family Park and held back the Mountaineers for 79 minutes, but West Virginia tallied a rebound goal in the 80th minute for the 1-0 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- K-State (3-10-3, 1-6-1 Big 12) trailed in shots in the opening half, 7-3, but went into the break with a scoreless tie. Aiding the first half effort was sophomore goalkeeper Murphy Sheaff, who stopped a one-on-one attempt by West Virginia's Taylor White. Sheaff cut off the angle and stopped the attempt near the penalty kick dot to keep the match tied.
- In the second half, West Virginia (6-7-3, 4-3-1) peppered shots at the Wildcats but couldn't find the magic touch. In the 80th minute, White attempted a shot from on the doorstep of the Wildcat frame. Sheaff stuffed the first shot, but the ball rebounded quickly back to White who placed her second attempt into the lower left corner.
- The Mountaineers held a 20-9 advantage in total shots and an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.

FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini

On his overall thoughts on the game…
"First half going into the wind I thought we actually settled the game down and did some nice things in our build up. Second half felt like with the wind we created some good chances and some good moments we just couldn't execute our chances, and our opportunities were there. We just couldn't figure out a way to put the ball in the net."

On both teams defenses playing well…
"Traditionally, they're a solid team. They do nice things. They remained composed going into the second half. It just seemed like both teams that were going into the wind had more composure than with which is strange. And we felt like we had opportunities to capitalize using the wind if we were to have had a little bit more intensity in the final third. And we just got to be better in those areas. And that's something that we have to continue to work on and figure out ways to score goals to win games. That was a good team there, but you know, that was a tough one."

On having two tough finishes…
"Just have to keep going. You got to keep going. It's going to fall for us. We just got to keep going, keep grinding, keep figuring out ways, keep building the relationships between the lines, especially with our offensive line to execute our chances. It will come. Box scores are really not going to show that we have a young team out there. It's going to come, we're just going to stay with it."

On how they worked on their foul trouble from the first half…
"I think they just came out and adapted to what the game brought to them."

On what he talks to the team about after having a 0-0 first half…
"More urgency. Find ways to be more creative in the attack, find ways to get shots off, get us corner kicks, to give us second chance opportunities. In the first half, we see here we didn't have enough shots. So we just got to go back and work on that and figure out ways to get us more chances."
