K-State Falls at Arizona State on Thursday Night

Oct 17, 2024 | Soccer

TEMPE, Ariz. – K-State looked to pick up its first Big 12 road win of the season on Thursday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium, but Arizona State came out on top with a 2-0 decision.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Arizona State (8-5-3, 3-5-1) went up front 1-0 in the 20th minute. In a transition attack, Enasia Colon found Keri Matthews in the middle of the K-State 18-yard box. Matthews one-touched her finish from 12 yards into the frame.
- K-State (3-10-3, 0-7-2 Big 12) nearly squared the match in the 53rd minute. Sophomore Jo Sees fired a shot to the lower right corner that Arizona State goalkeeper Pauline Nelles was forced to make a diving stop on. Sees led K-State with three shots on the night.
- The Sun Devils added an insurance goal in the 85th minute, as Cameron Valladares uncorked a shot from 20 yards in the middle of the field and found space just inside the left post.
- Arizona State recorded a 15-7 advantage in total shots and a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. The Wildcats held a slim margin in corner kicks, 6-5.
- K-State junior goalkeeper Murphy Sheaff ended the night with five saves, This was Sheaff's 10th match this season and the 18th of her K-State career with five or more saves.

FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini

On what he saw from his team tonight...
"We're playing good soccer right now, overall, we are just lacking the ability to score goals, and it's causing us to chase games like we did there at the end, throw numbers forward and just try and equalize. Not scoring goals right now is overshadowing other good things we are doing, and we're trying to figure out things. A little bit of our possession was direct and indirect. I felt like we had moments of holding the ball and playing a little too negative in our possession. And then we started playing a little bit more forward, and it gave us a few chances, but not as many as you needed, especially in this game."

On execution of corner kicks and set pieces...
"We all know one of our bigger targets is Jazmin. So can we find somebody else to kind of free her up. They are man-marking her pretty tight. Can we be a little bit more creative? We have set pieces and restart plays, but we're just not executing those chances."

On the first Arizona State goal...
"They found a player up the field. We were transitioning toward their goal in an attack. We saw the build up, one of their attacking mids made the run and we didn't track back fast enough to stop the cross and that's how they scored the goal."

On what he wants to see from his team on Sunday...
"Collectively, stay together. Figure out ways to produce a little bit more offense so we have more chances right now. I feel like we're doing a good job defensively. For the most part. We're doing a good job possessing with purpose, but where we need to figure out ways to put the ball in the back of the net and creating more chances to put the ball in the back of the net, I think that's something that, we got to focus on going into that game."
