FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Colleen Corbin
On getting the win for seniors night and overall…
"Good. It's funny, because now I think our team has really high expectations for ourselves, and so it's pretty wild when winning 3-1 at home doesn't necessarily feel as good as you want it to feel. I think there's a little bit of disappointment and a little bit of air that kind of let out of the group when we did give up a ball and didn't feel like we needed to or should have. So it's a weird place to be when you win 3-1 at home and there's still a little bit of disappointment, right? But really proud of the group for getting a win. A win is a win, and we'll take wins every day of the week, I don't really care how they come. We can always go back and adjust and make improvements, but excited for the group to respond after a tough result against Nebraska. And then to turn around and be back at home and put three goals in the back of the net and again, walk away with the W is always something that we'll be happy with."
On what these seniors have meant to the program…
"They've had belief in me and my staff, and they've trusted us with the process. And that's a really big ask for a group of kids that could have gone anywhere to try to go win their senior year, and instead to want to win here and want to win with us. They care about K-State, they care about this community, and it's helped shape them as young women. And I'm just really grateful and really proud that they decided to stay and be a part of this team. And they'll leave their legacy as the group that really started us in this direction. So proud of them and excited to be able to coach them this season."
On how often they work on penalty kicks…
"We actually train them a lot. Typically anytime we tie in a training game, we will usually kick it off in PKs. So we've hit a lot of PKs in training, which is great, these are the moments that we want to prepare for, and everyone, for the most part, has hit them. I don't really decide or pick who it is that's out there doing it. They have to step up in the moment and feel confident when they go up to strike the ball. So really happy to see Allison [Marshall] step up and take one, because she's been smashing them in training, and happy for [Andra] Mohler on senior day to get a goal. We were prepared for that moment and just happy that we capitalized."
On how prepared they feel going into conference play…
"It's the winningest conference [Big 12 Conference] in the country right now. So everyone is doing well, which is great for us, but also is going to pose some pretty hefty problems for us down the road. So just continuing to build confidence and gain momentum being 5-1-1 at the end of nonconference. I think everyone's really pleased with that, and I think they also know that they have the capacity to win games and we just have to assert ourselves and play the way we want to play and not take breaks again in our mentality and our identity. But there are some really awesome teams in this conference that are going to give us problems and we just have to have the right mentality to continue to approach those things in a positive way."
FROM THE PITCH
K-State Senior Forward Andra Mohler
On scoring a penalty kick for her senior night to help get a win…
"The perfect way to celebrate it. And scoring a goal meant a lot on the first PK. A lot of the girls were like, take it, take it. And I was like, no, no. And then obviously we got the second one. And the girls wanted me to take the first one, so I'll take it. So scoring that meant a lot to me."
On strategy for going into penalty kicks…
"I do typically go to the same side every time, it doesn't really matter which side, you guys want to kick it hard enough. Been doing that since high school, but other than that, just take a deep breath and go."
On how fun it is to be a part of this team…
"Oh, man, it's literally a dream, especially compared to where we were and where we are now. I could not have imagined a better start to the season, and really excited to see what we can do in conference."
K-State Sophomore Forward Allison Marshall
On getting a win for senior night…
"It was great to get a win for three amazing people, three amazing players. I'm very blessed to have gotten to play with them for two years and just be around them, learn from them and their leadership. Obviously, a 3-1 win is amazing for senior night and we're super happy we got that for them. But like there was times we weren't playing our best, we weren't getting the first second balls, and we just got to be better going into conference play when it really matters. So we can be happy about the win, but then also knowing that that stuff won't be good enough, and we'll get punished for that when we get to conference, when we get to those bigger games."
On strategy for going into penalty kicks…
"Before I go up there, I'll pick a side wherever I go and just be confident in my shot. We practice them and practice all the time, and so just believing in yourself and just having confidence in your ability to put it away is definitely important."
On responding to the first big adversity of the season losing to Nebraska…
"The next day, we watch film, we look at the good things, we look at bad things, and then we come out to practice, and then we fix those things, and go from there. We like to talk about how each game, we learn something, and then the next game, we can apply that and kind of build off that, instead of taking some things and then not other things. So it's very important to learn from those mistakes, learn from the loss, and then also come back and fight and then get that one for seniors."
