Baylor Holds Back K-State on Friday Night
Oct 13, 2017 | Soccer
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State women's soccer looked to climb up another spot in the Big 12 standings on Friday night at the K-State Soccer Complex, but Baylor held off the Wildcats for a 1-0 win.
"We had a tale of two halves," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini on how the match unfolded. "The first half we were asleep and just playing defense. Then in the sencond half was when we started to take more chance and create 2v1 opportunities."
Baylor (8-3-2, 2-2-1 Big 12) scored the opening goal in the 31st minute. A cross from Ariel Leach from the left of K-State goalkeeper Miranda Larkin found the foot of Julie James eight yards from the net. James finished with a shot into the upper netting. It was the second goal of the season for James.
The Bears tallied a 10-1 edge in total shots and a 4-0 lead in shots on goal in the first half.
Kansas State (6-7-1, 1-4-0 Big 12) increased its chances in the second half, recording five total shots in the second half with four on goal. The Wildcats' best opportunity to even the match came in the 83rd minute, as the Bears were whistled for a handball in the 18-yard box resulting in a penalty kick for K-State.
K-State freshman forward Hannah Davis stepped forward to take the first penalty kick in program history. Davis's shot to the left side of the net was deflected away by Baylor goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt.
"It was super frustrating," said Davis on her attempt to tie the match. "I am hanging my head pretty low tonight, but she is a really good goalkeeper. It was a really good save."
For the night, Baylor recorded a 25-6 advantage in total shots but only a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Larkin finished the night with five saves, while Wandt pocketed four to register the shutout. The match was physical, as 28 total fouls were called and three yellow cards were handed out (two to Baylor; one to K-State).
Kansas State will conclude its weekend at home on Sunday afternoon against ninth-ranked Texas at 1 p.m. Sunday's match against the Longhorns is Pack the Pitch day. Fans can purchase tickets and select concession items for just a $1.

On how physical Baylor was....
"It was a different challenge with size and height. We hung in there and did some good things."
Â
On the way the match unfolded...
"We had a tale of two halves. The first half we were asleep and just playing defense. Then in the sencond half was when we started to take more chance and create 2v1 opportunities."
On the goal...
"We lost on marking and tracking. We fell asleep especially with service in the box."
Freshman Forward Hannah Davis
On the frustration of the missed penalty kick…
"Yeah, it was super frustrating. I am hanging my head pretty low tonight, but she is a really good goalkeeper. It was a really good save. I shot the same way I always shoot, bottom left corner for me and bottom right for the goalkeeper. Usually goalkeepers cannot really dive to their right, they usually like it to their left. I really went up there with confidence and I was the only one who offered to take it, so I cannot really blame myself. It was a team effort tonight, we all had chances to score and we just could not put it in the back of the net and sometimes that happens. I think in the first half we needed to play a little bit better and the result would have come, but Sunday hopefully we come back and get a win."
On solving Baylor's defense…
"You know it was not really their defense, I think it was more their offense. They kept pushing forward and pushing forward and sending through ball after through ball. We just could not connect our passes. Before the game we talked about connecting our passes and playing out of the back. We kept playing long balls and Coach Jess (Smith) told us before the game that we might get sucked into that type of play and we sure did. I think we just need to start to learn to settle down in situations like that and I think it will finally come."
Baylor Head Coach Paul Jobson
On coming out of Manhattan with a win…
"It is huge. From a shot standpoint we have plenty of shots. Coach Dibbini and his staff have done a great job getting this program where it is as quickly as they have. I am really impressed with the team and their fight and mentality. They are a really good Big 12 team and they are going to be a lot to contend with over the years. They were a lot to contend with tonight. They put forth a great effort. We are really happy to be on the road obviously and getting a victory it is always tough to do especially against a tough team like K-State."
On freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt's penalty kick save…
"It was huge. You have to remember that kid is a freshman. That is a big play for a young kid to make and she has been solid in the goal for us all year. That is just another big time play for her and hopefully that gets her something close to a Big 12 award this week."
On game atmosphere at K-State…
"It is amazing. K-State has really done a good job opening their arms to women's soccer. They are in a lot of ways kind of setting some standards for Big 12 teams and what a lot of us need to bring to the table. I am really impressed with their fans and their support. It is some great stuff. I am looking forward to seeing the progress they continue to make. This is their starting point amazing things are going to be going on here in the future."
