Ninth-Ranked Texas Edges K-State in Overtime

Oct 15, 2017 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Playing just its second ranked opponent in program history, Kansas State women's soccer took the ninth-ranked Texas Longhorns into overtime on Sunday afternoon at the K-State Soccer Complex. The Longhorns would prevail with a goal in the 93rd minute for the 1-0 win.

"We battled and played a very good game," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini about Sunday's result. "We competed very, very well and had some good chances. That is a good team over there but we turned that switch off for three seconds and they punished us for it. At this level, playing this game we have to be consistent on turning on the switch until the game is over. Unfortunately it is a cruel game and you saw that today."

K-State (6-8-1, 1-5-0 Big 12) and Texas played to a scoreless tie in the opening half. The Wildcats registered five shots in the opening stanza, with four on frame. K-State threatened in the first minute, as freshman Hannah Davis sent a corner kick in front of the Texas net. The ball eventually landed at junior Megan Kalkofen's foot, but her shot attempt was deflected away by Texas goalkeeper Nicole Curry.

Texas (12-1-2, 4-1-2) proved to be the aggressors in the second half, outshooting K-State 8-2 including a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. However, Larkin pocketed four saves in the second half to keep the match knotted.

After Tatum Wagner threatened the far left post with a shot early in overtime, the Longhorns came back the other way. In the 93rd minute, Haley Berg collected a pass from Cyera Hintzen. Berg found space in the middle of the field and sent her high shot towards the K-State net. The ball went just over the outstretched arms of Larkin, bounced off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net to end the match.

"I knew she had a little bit too much time and that she was going to be able to get a pretty good strike off," said Larkin about the game-winning goal. "I just tried to get there and I could not."

Overall, Texas held a 25-8 advantage in total shots and an 11-5 lead in shots on goal. Texas finished with a 5-1 lead in corner kicks.

Kansas State will embark on its final regular season road trip of the 2017 season, as the Wildcats visit Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Friday, October 20, to face 25th-ranked Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. K-State will conclude its weekend at Oklahoma on Sunday, October 22, at 1 p.m.

What They Said

Kansas State Head Coach Mike Dibbini

On the frustration of losing in overtime…
"We battled and played a very good game. We competed very, very well and had some good chances. That is a good team over there but we turned that switch off for three seconds and they punished us for it. At this level, playing this game we have to be consistent on turning on the switch until the game is over. Unfortunately it is a cruel game and you saw that today."

On Miranda Larkin's performance today…
"She made a lot of good saves. She keeps us in the game, keeps us battling and builds our confidence. She does a nice job for us like that."

On the struggling offense…
"It is a combination of the offense struggling and the defense we are facing. We created a lot more chances today but the defense on their end is pretty athletic. I thought we did a nice job of creating more chances today than we did against Baylor."

On coming out better this game…
"For 90 minutes I thought we were awake and then the first couple minutes of the overtime I do not know what happened. After Tatum [Wagner]'s play there on the offensive end we just kind of shut down for that three to five second period."

On the Texas' winning goal…
"They had a lot of time, we were not pressing and we dropped off. We cannot do that in this level."

On identifying one problem with their struggles…
"We are a brand new program in the Big 12. That is the issue; we are just dealing with figuring out ways to compete. We should not even be in the position if you look at brand new programs losing 5-0 and 6-0. I think we are doing a great job right now."

On holding Texas scoreless during regulation…
"I think we are doing a heck of a job defensively and we are doing our best collectively to create chances to score some goals. We are evolving as you speak. For us to be in the position that we are in we are overachieving. However, it is tough when you are tasting a point or three points and you do not get them by just turning it off for a little bit. That is what happened today."

On improving versus Oklahoma State on Friday…
"Carrying the momentum, the focus and the drive. Just making sure that we can build off of it offensively. I think defensively we do a nice job but we definitely have to try to find separation. You have to find separation in this game to win and obviously we have to work on that and see what we can do. The defenses are more stout here in the Big 12 but you can slowly see us chipping away."

Senior Goalkeeper Miranda Larkin

On the Texas' game-winning goal…
"I knew she had a little bit too much time and that she was going to be able to get a pretty good strike off. I just tried to get there and I could not."

On the frustration of one goal being the difference…
"It is frustrating but that is just how it goes sometimes in overtime. We just have to stay on. We were getting a little bit tired and should have pressed her a little bit more but it happens. We are on to the next one."

On sensing a loss of focus during overtime…
"I thought we were getting a little bit tired. We were doing pretty good, though, and were trying to stay focused in the back and just get some more opportunities in the front."

On holding Texas scoreless during regulation…
"I think that we could have done better. We definitely could have pulled off a tie or gotten a goal in the last minute. Our expectations are higher even though we are a first-year program and with the looks of how the game went I think we should have either gotten a tie or won the game."

On improving versus Oklahoma State on Friday…
"If we come out like we played today I would be pretty happy. I think it is just the time of the day and if we have the final touches. Just finishing up a couple of things and coming out how we played today would be great."

On the struggling offense…
"Right now I think it is collective. The defense is doing a pretty good job getting us saves and things like that and the offense is just working. We are going to come together in practice and try to get it flowing together."
