K-State Pushes 24th Ranked Oklahoma State to Brink
Oct 20, 2017 | Soccer
STILLWATER, Oklahoma – Kansas State looked to pull the upset on Friday afternoon over 24th-ranked Oklahoma State at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex, but an early goal from the Wildcats did not hold up as the Cowgirls fended off the bid with a 2-1 win.
"I thought in the first half that we were caught by surprise to have an early lead," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini about the match. "We withstood their high-powered attack to end the half down one and then made some adjustments in the second half. I thought we outplayed them in the second half. If you look at the stat sheet we outshot them and had a number of corners in the half. I think one of the positives we could take away from this is we created a lot of chances against a very good team. We also received strong efforts from a number of our bench players this afternoon."
Facing the highest scoring team in the Big 12 in Oklahoma State, Kansas State (6-8-1, 1-5-0 Big 12) played the first half into a strong wind which was steady at 25 miles per hour and gusted to 35 miles per hour. Despite the wind, K-State took the early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute.
The Wildcats were awarded a corner following the end of an attacking rush. Freshman Hannah Davis took the corner for K-State and found the head of freshman defender Avery Green at the right near post. Green redirected the and the two-hopper found the back of the net. The official time of the goal was 5:20, making it the earliest goal this season for K-State and the second earliest goal in program history. It was the second goal scored on a corner kick this season.
"I saw the ball coming in and it was the perfect height," said Green about the early 1-0 lead. "I didn't see anyone around me so I tried to flick it into the front post. I was surprised it went in. I talked to some of the girls right after the goal and they said everyone thought it went out."
The goal was the first of Green's collegiate career. The assist by Davis was her fifth of the season, which is a program record for a single season and the second-most for a career in program history. Davis has now scored or assisted on seven of the last 12 K-State goals.
Oklahoma State (12-2-2, 5-1-1) answered in the 17th minute. Charme Morgan gathered a K-State turnover just outside the K-State 18-yard box. Morgan took a dribble into the box and fired a rocket to the far left post and found the upper corner.
The Cowgirls built its lead to 2-1 in the 23rd minute. K-State was whistled for a foul 20 yards inside its attacking zone. Laurene Tresfield took the direct kick and used the wind at her back to carry the ball into K-State's 18-yard box. After one bounce in the box, Anna Beffer gathered the ball and sent her shot into the net from close range.
At the half, the Cowgirls held a 12-1 edge in total shots including a 5-1 lead in shots on goal. K-State had the edge in corner kicks, with a 5-2 advantage.
Kansas State was able to use the wind at its back to outshoot Oklahoma State in the second half, 5-4. The Wildcats were unable to find the equalizer from four attempts on frame in the second stanza. K-State dominated in corner kicks in the second half, with a 6-1 edge.

What They Said
Kansas State head coach Mike Dibbini
On the volume of corner kicks...
"I told them when we were watching film this week that they were susceptible to corners. They drop a lot of balls goalkeeping or they don't defend them well. We tried to play a lot of balls in there and give ourselves an opportunity. We executed part of the plan, we just didn't have enough in terms of scoring goals. We had 11 corners today, that's a good sign for us going forward."
On the goal...
"We did a good job of mixing it up. We have multiple girls that are good in the air, including Avery. We sent two to the back and one to the front and Avery was able to convert it at the near post. Hannah is a two-footed player and when she is on the left side, she is looking for that in swinger, either near post or far post. Avery was in the right position at the right time."
On the second half...
"I thought in the first half that we were caught by surprise to have an early lead. We withstood their high-powered attack to end the half down one and then made some adjustments in the second half. I thought we outplayed them in the second half. If you look at the stat sheet we outshot them and had a number of corners in the half. Freshman defender Avery Green
On her goal...
"I saw the ball coming in and it was the perfect height. I didn't see anyone around me so I tried to flick in to the front post. I was surprised. I talked to some of the girls right after the goal and they said everyone thought it went out."
On the team's defense today...
"They are very dynamic up top, so I think communication was key and being able to pass girls on to each other. We were able to tell each of the defenders what we were seeing on the field."
Freshman forward Hannah Davis
On the corner kicks today...
"We played a different formation today with two up top. It gives us more of an opportunity up top to get more space. Having people come out of the back and get forward forced us to the outside to get corner kicks. That's what Coach Dibbini tells us to do if we can't get a cross off to try and get a corner kick."
On the corner kick assist for the goal...
"Honestly, my corner kicks today were not very good. On the one we scored on, I went near post. I like to try and play Avery and Coach Dibbini tells us to try and play her, so I played her and no one realized we scored. It was an awesome feeling knowing Avery scored. She just started getting regular playing time. She has made a huge impact on the field and having her score really felt good."
