K-State Unlucky in 1-0 Loss at TCU

Sep 24, 2017 | Soccer

FORT WORTH, Texas – Kansas State soccer improved its play from its Big 12 debut on Friday and held TCU scoreless for the first 75 minutes of the match. The Horned Frogs benefitted from an own goal miscue to take a 1-0 win over the Wildcats at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium.

K-State falls to 5-5-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the Big 12. TCU improves to 8-3-0 and 2-0-0 in the Big 12.

"The coaching staff came up with a plan to stay organized defensively and look to take our chances offensively when we gained possession of the ball," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini about Sunday's game plan. "We did a nice job of staying organized defensively and taking some chances on some counterattacks. Our girls battled and played hard. They had a gutsy performance against a really good team on the road."

The teams played to a scoreless draw in the opening half. TCU managed nine shots but just two were on frame with K-State goalkeeper Miranda Larkin making the save on each. The Wildcats tallied just two shots in the opening stanza. The Horned Frogs attempted nine corner kicks in the first half.

Kansas State and TCU played even for the first 30 minutes of the second half. A bit of bad luck in the 76th minute, as Horned Frogs sent a cross towards the K-State net. In an attempt to head the ball away from danger, the ball deflected straight into the top of the net resulting in an own goal and a 1-0 TCU lead.

"It was just one of those unlucky unfortunate games with the own goal," said Dibbini. "It kind of broke us there a little bit. If we could have survived to overtime, we were going to make an adjustment to get us going. It is one of those games."

TCU finished the afternoon with 15 total shots and five on goal. K-State attempted three shots with none on goal. TCU set a K-State opponent record with 15 corner kicks on Sunday. The Wildcats did not attempt a corner.

Dibbini is now looking forward to hosting the program's first Big 12 match at the K-State Soccer Complex.

"We need the K-State fanbase to be there and be that 12th man for us. From our players, we need to see the same fight and energy as we saw today into Friday."

Kansas State will return to the K-State Soccer Complex on Friday, September 29, as the Wildcats host defending Big 12 champion and No. 5-ranked West Virginia in the first Big 12 home match in program history. Friday's match is part of a "Wildcat Weekend" as fans can purchase a standing room only ticket for only $3.

The match will be streamed on ESPN3 and the audio will be available in Manhattan on 101.5 KROCK and for free at kstatesports.com.
