(9) West Virginia Edges Kansas State, 1-0
Sep 29, 2017 | Soccer
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State women's soccer pieced together its strongest defensive outing of the season, but No. 9 West Virginia came away with the 1-0 win in the first home Big 12 match in K-State's history. It was the first match in K-State program history against a nationally ranked opponent.
"They executed it to a T," said head coach Mike Dibbini about his team's execution in relation to the game plan. "I am extremely proud of our players. We didn't get the result we wanted, but we almost did. The plan was executed in the first half. We just needed to get out of there scoreless our hopefully had a lead.
We had some chances in the second half. It is an unfortunate goal there at the end. I am proud of these players. We hung in there against a very, very good team. We hung in there and definitely got some respect. This is a great confidence booster heading into the next match."
Kansas State (5-6-1, 0-3-0 Big 12) played West Virginia to a scoreless draw in the opening half. The Mountaineers managed an 11-2 shot difference including a 6-1 margin in shots on goal.
West Virginia (9-3-0, 2-1-0) threatened to break the tie with just over a minute remaining. Alli Magaletta gathered a cross roughly 14 yards from the K-State net and sent a rocket on frame near the left post. K-State goalkeeper Miranda Larkin tracked the shot through traffic and made a diving stop for her sixth save of the half.
Kansas State countered when it could all night from its defensive backfield. In the second half, the Wildcats would charge up the field a number of times forcing the West Virginia into a retreat. K-State's Hannah Davis fired off all three of K-State's shots in the second half including one on frame from 23 yards out.
West Virginia cracked the code on K-State's defense in the 84th minute to register the game-winner. Carla Portillo took a pass from Sh'Nia Gordon and dribbled into a wide-open space in the Wildcat defense. Portillo fired her shot from 18 yards out and found the upper right corner for her second goal of the season.
The Mountaineers finished with a 19-5 advantage in shots, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. West Virginia held a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.
Kansas State will stay in the state of Kansas for its next match, as the Wildcats will face KU at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence on Friday, October 6 at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast on Spectrum Sports and will be available on 101.5 KROCK in Manhattan and for free at kstatesports.com.

On how coachable his team is...
"Their sponges and they are very coachable. They are buying into the game plan and they are executing it. They have been doing it the last couple of games and if they continue to do that we will start to get positive results."
West Virginia Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown
On the first meeting in the series...
"I give Kansas State a lot of credit. They had a great game plan. They dropped a lot of numbers in front of the net. It was just really hard to get a good look. They definitely needed that. I was proud of Carla and her senior leadership finding the back of the net, it was hard to find."
On the late goal…
"A junior to a senior. Great leadership just finding that gap and Carla found that gap and was able to create that finish."
On the shutout...
"I know that it was really important to the back line and to Rylee (Foster) and I am pleased that we got not only the win but also the shut out."
