Late TCU Goal Drops K-State on Senior Day

Oct 14, 2018 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – A second half goal from a K-State senior on Senior Day brought the Wildcats into a tie, but TCU converted a corner kick in the 70th minute to end K-State's 2018 home schedule with a 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon at the K-State Soccer Complex.

The Wildcats honored its six-member senior class of Morgan Egan, Krista Haddock, Megan Kalkofen, Morgan Mauck, Haley Sutter and Tatum Wagner in a ceremony before Sunday's match. In their K-State careers, the six players were responsible for 15 goals and 12 assists.

Kansas State (4-9-2, 0-6-0 Big 12) has played in adverse conditions in a number of matches during the 2018 season, but Sunday's weather may have been the worst. A driving rain came down with sustained winds of 15 miles per hour from the north with gusts to 33.

TCU (10-4-2, 3-3-1) took advantage of the wind in the first half. The Horned Frogs tallied a 14-1 lead in total shots including a 5-1 edge in shots on goal. K-State's shot on goal came from Wagner.

In the 23rd minute, TCU took a 1-0 lead. Tara Smith played the ball up the right side of the field, then slotted a pass through to McKenzie Oliver. Oliver took one touch on the ball and finished on the ground from eight yards into the left side of the net.

Just two minutes into the second half, K-State tied the match at one. Sophomore Hannah Davis attempted K-State's second corner kick of the match. Her boot found the head of Sutter who guided the ball past TCU goalkeeper Emily Alvarado. It was K-State's first goal this season on a corner kick.

The goal by Sutter was her second this season, both coming in Big 12 play. The two goals are a new single-season career-high for Sutter and improved her career total to four.

The tally ended K-State's goalless streak at 484:44, spanning all six Big 12 matches this season. This  was the second-longest shutout streak in program history, trailing a 575:09 stretch without a goal from the final four matches of the 2016 season and the first two-plus matches of the 2017 season.

The Horned Frogs registered the match-winning goal in the 70th minute on a corner kick. Yazmeen Ryan threaded a line drive ball into the six-yard box. Natalee Heiser charged in and put her head on the ball, sending it to the netting.

For the afternoon, TCU outshot K-State 25-4 including an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Horned Frogs also tallied a 7-3 lead in corner kicks.

K-State ends its 2018 home schedule with a 3-7-0 record.

Kansas State will begin a three-match road trip next weekend with a pair of matches against ranked opponents in the state of Texas. K-State will open the trip at (14) Baylor on Friday at 7 p.m., then will visit (20) Texas on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Friday's match at Baylor will be available on Baylor All-Access, but a subscription is required. Sunday's match will be broadcast by the Longhorn Network. Both matches will be available on 101.5 KROCK in Manhattan and for free at kstatesports.com.

What They Said

Kansas State Head coach Mike Dibbini

On the inclement weather...
"The game plan was to play in the middle of the field, as far as pressing in the first half. Because, we were going into the wind and hopefully we can look to counter them a little bit. In the second half with the wind we were trying to press them, even with the wind and the press it is very difficult. Wind was going pretty hard, and when we wanted it to stop pressing when we had possession of the ball it was difficult to connect passes because the wind was just pushing the ball. Conditions were tough but I felt like overall they did a nice job of battling back, scoring a goal to even it up, which is something we haven't done yet but it was a little too late."

On Haley Sutter's goal...
"It's always nice to get a goal in the Big 12 level. Haley did a nice job getting on the end of that of the corner and getting it in the air, then she attacked the ball and got the goal."

On senior day...
"It was extremely special. We honored and celebrated them today. They helped paved the way and set the foundation. I will always have a piece of them in my heart. They chose this opportunity of coming here, this unique opportunity to establish this program."
