Oct 05, 2018 | Soccer
MANHATTAN, Kansas – In the first Dillons Sunflower Showdown in women's soccer to be played at the K-State Soccer Complex, Kansas defeated Kansas State, 2-0, on Friday night. The series between the schools is now tied at one win apiece.
With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 4-7-2 on the season, including an 0-4-0 mark in Big 12 play. K-State has lost four straight and five of their last six matches.
Kansas (9-2-2, 3-1-1 Big 12) tallied the opening goal of the match in the 22nd minute. Eva Eliasdottir glided a ball up the right sideline to Katie McClure. McClure drove towards the net from the right of the frame and finished with a low shot from eight yards.
The Jayhawks added an insurance goal in the 34th minute of the first half. Kansas crossed a ball from deep on the left side of the goal. K-State goalkeeper Emma Malsy attempted to pick up the bouncing ball, but it slipped through her fingers. KU's Taylor Christie pounced on the loose ball and finished into an open net.
Kansas held an 8-4 edge in total shots, including a 5-0 lead in shots on goal.
In the second half, the shots were tied at six each, while K-State registered a 2-1 edge in shots on goal in the second frame. The Wildcats also led in corner kicker in the second half, 6-4.
Just past the halfway point of the second half, K-State appeared to pull within one. Haley Sutter went after a deflected ball near the end line to the right of the Kansas goal. Sutter attempted a cross with her right foot that bounced off the leg of Kansas goalkeeper Sarah Peters and into the net. The ball was ruled to have been out of bounds before Sutter played it, nullifying the K-State goal and keeping the match at 2-0.
Kansas State suffered its third straight shutout and the seventh of the season. The Wildcats have gone without a goal for 273:28 of game action.
The crowd on Friday night at the K-State Soccer Complex was 2,026. This was the seventh largest crowd to see a match in Manhattan and the seventh time in K-State's three seasons as a program the Wildcats have played a home match in front of 2,000 or more fans.
Kansas State will continue its three-match home stand next Friday, as the Wildcats host Texas Tech at 6 p.m. Friday's match is part of a Wildcat Weekend. What They Said
Kansas State head coach Mike Dibbini
On the team's overall performance...
"We put ourselves in a position to win the game. We make some mistakes that is costing us the game and digging ourselves a hole. We are paying attention to the detail of those mistakes and we are competing well. The bottom line is that we are always finding new challenges that are coming up as the program is learning more and more. We do well in certain areas but then there's a new challenge that gets in front of us and that's kind of what happened with us tonight."
On K-State's offense...
"I think the other team's defenses organize well and are good at defending but it is also us not executing our chances. We needed one goal in that second half to get momentum. I thought we had one there, but it was a tough call and unfortunately we didn't get one. In the game of soccer, momentum shifts can happen really quick and we didn't get one."
On Kansas' skills vs. K-State's...
"I mean, that's a good team there. They're a top-25 team for a reason, they have a lot of experience and we're still figuring out ways to keep getting better. You have to look at the overall picture of who we are playing and what we are doing to improve. If you looked at us tonight, compared to what we've been doing, we created chances to win the game but we are just not executing those chances."
Kansas head coach Mark Francis
On winning in a hostile environment...
"It was a great crowd here today. That was the first time we've been here so I think that they have a good setup here, I liked it here. It's always fun, even if they're not your fans, to have a great atmosphere. I'm glad we got the win, and obviously any win on the road in the Big 12 is good. I didn't think today was our best game in terms of the way we played and our rhythm but I think, to be fair, K-State had a lot to do with that. I think they battled extremely hard today. I give the players and staff a lot of credit, I think they threw us off a little bit. We weren't as sharp as we have been but I said to the girls, 'if you want to have the season that we want to have, you have to find ways to win the game even if it isn't in the prettiest way.' I was proud of our resilience we had as a team."
On starting strong with two goals...
"We were way better in the first half. In terms of chances we created, everything was better. Two really good goals, the first one a really good goal from Katie, the second one, really a mistake from the keeper, but Taylor Christie did a really good job of finishing from the angle that she did, I didn't think she was going to get it in from that angle. She did a really good job of keeping composed in that situation. I said to the girls, for us to win, last year we lost to these guys at our place, they didn't have a lot of shots and we had many and we lost. So I said we've got to be tuned in in those key moments, those game-defining moments. And I feel like, tonight, we were. One of Ceri Holland made an unbelievable challenge in the box when a kid was wide open and she came in from nowhere and plays like that help you win these kinds of games."
