K-State Downed by Pair of Second Half Goals
Oct 12, 2018 | Soccer
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State registered a solid defensive effort for 72 minutes on Friday night at the K-State Soccer Complex, but Texas Tech's top two goal scorers registered tallies just two minutes apart to send the Red Raiders to a 2-0 win. The Wildcats have now dropped five straight matches and have been held scoreless in the last four matches.
Kansas State (4-8-2, 0-5-0 Big 12) and Texas Tech (11-3-1, 3-2-1) were scoreless in the first 45 minutes. The Wildcats held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal in the opening half.
K-State's best chance in the first stanza came in the 39th minute. Christina Baxter crossed a ball from the left side of the field. Ashley Zane charged in to gather the pass and fired a shot from 12 yards, but it was stopped by Texas Tech goalkeeper Marissa Zucchetto.
Texas Tech's best opportunity in the opening half came with under a minute to play following a direct kick from 20 yards. Brooke Denesik took the initial shot on the direct kick, which Emma Malsy made a diving save on. A scrum then ensued in front of the net. Malsy then stopped Carly Wickenheiser's shot, before Denesik fired a shot wide to keep the match scoreless. Malsy finished the night with four saves.
During a halftime ceremony, Kansas State Athletics representatives, the Buser family and K-State head coach Mike Dibbini broke ground for Buser Family Park. The new facility will be located on the current site of the temporary bleachers and will be ready for the start of the 2019 season. The new facility will feature 1,400 chairback seats, locker rooms, sports medicine and coaching staff offices.
K-State's solid defense continued into the first 28 minutes of the second half, as the Wildcats kept the Red Raiders off the scoreboard. In the 73rd minute of the second half, Texas Tech took advantage of a K-State turnover and notched the first goal of the match. Kirsten Davis took possession and drove on the right side of the field. Davis then uncorked her shot from 17 yards into the left side of the net. The goal was the fourth of the season for Davis.
Moments later, K-State cleared a Texas Tech corner kick from inside the 18-yard box. However, the clearance went directly to Jade King who sent her shot back into the fray in front of the K-State net finding the back of the frame to give Texas Tech a 2-0 lead. The goal the seventh of the seven for King.
Texas Tech ended the night with a 14-9 lead in total shots, but shots on goal were tied at six each. The Red Raiders led in corner kicks, 5-3.
K-State will end its 2018 home schedule on Sunday against TCU. Match time is 12:30 p.m. Before Sunday's match, Kansas State will honor its six seniors: Morgan Egan, Krista Haddock, Megan Kalkofen, Morgan Mauck, Haley Sutter and Tatum Wagner.

What They Said
Kansas State Head Coach Mike Dibbini
On the team's performance today…
"I think they stuck to the game plan and disrupted Texas Tech's rhythm. I thought we played an excellent game. It is unfortunate we made a couple of mistakes late in the game this time and that is the name of the game."
On defending Texas Tech the whole 90 minutes…
"I felt like we ran out of steam. We were doing a very nice job of defending and attacking them. On both sides we had some chances to execute on some goals in front of the goals. We had some opportunities and we just could not find the back of the net. They executed their two chances and on the shot count it was six to six it is just unfortunate."
On differences between first and second half…
"Because of our press we ran out of gas going into the second half. We just have to figure it out and rebound to get ready to go for Sunday."
On preparing for Sunday…
"They have to know they played a tough match and a hard game. They just have to rebound and get themselves mentally focused and recovered then we will be ready to go on Sunday."
Redshirt Sophomore Goalkeeper Emma Malsy
On what changed in the second half…
"I think we needed to come out a little bit stronger on our turnovers. We need to get out of the corner a little bit faster. That is something we are always looking to work on is pressing the second ball. Especially because when those balls get played out they are really dangerous opportunities for the other team so that is something we can continue to work on."
On coming out better after last week's loss to KU…
"I think we played today with a lot of heart. That is something we have been trying to get out of all of us making sure we are supportive of one another on and off the field. Also making sure that when we come out here we are ready to perform and make sure we are starting hard. Obviously I think in practice that is where we start that and last week we did not have a good practice and it showed."
On preparing for Sunday…
"We need to put this one behind us to focus on Sunday's game. It is a tough loss but we showed up today and this was a winnable game for us. That proves to us that we can compete and if we can continue to keep that mentality for Sunday we can build off of that and get a positive result."
Texas Tech Head Coach Tom Stone
On the game...
"I've never been to Manhattan, but it's beautiful here. It's amazing, these guys are all class. I can't believe how good they are in such a short time. They took it to us. I thought we were really tentative. We got to the half, and we said, 'we are better than this, we got to get to the ball first.' The adjustments worked and we played harder in the second half."
On the two goals in two minutes...
"The second goal was the key one right? If you only score one you are pretty nervous with just a one-goal lead, but having the second one made it feel like it was really out of reach. Credit them (K-State), they were going hard."
