K-State Falls at Texas on Friday Night
Oct 09, 2020 | Soccer
AUSTIN, Texas – On a steamy Friday evening at Mike A. Myers Stadium, K-State looked for its first win in the series with Texas. The homestanding Longhorns used a pair of first half goals to hold back the Wildcats with a 7-0 win.
"Too many factors for us in this match resulted in us being outperformed tonight in every category," stated K-State head coach Mike Dibbini. "Our attitude and effort were not good and at this level when that happens we will get punished like we did today."
Texas (2-3-0) took the early advantage in the third minute. The Longhorns appeared to be bottled up by the K-State defense in the far corner. Presley Echols then played a ball to Haley Berg who snuck behind the Wildcat defense and finished from four yards in the lower right of the frame.
K-State (0-4-0) narrowly missed a chance to even the match at one with a transition chance. Freshman Maddie Weichel dribbled down the left side of the field and drew the attention of multiple Longhorn defenders. After entering the 18-yard box, Weichel found a wide-open Kyler Goins who trailed the play at the top of the box. Goins rolled her quick shot attempt inches past the right post.
The Longhorns increased their lead to two in the 32nd minute. Emma Regan finished a penalty kick inside the left post.
Despite the first half deficit, the Wildcats held a 9-8 edge in total shots and a 3-0 lead in corner kicks.
"We did that naturally because they gave us time and space," said Dibbini about the team's first half play. "Once we lost Avery, the wheels fell off for us defensively. This shows the importance of her on the field and cleaning up our play among our inexperienced backline."
Texas went in front by a score of 3-0 in the 59th minute. K-State misplayed a ball in its defensive backfield and Julia Grosso intercepted the pass and finished into an empty net from two yards.
The Longhorns would add four more goals in the final 30 minutes for the final margin. The seven goals allowed by K-State were the most surrendered in a match in the program's brief history.
K-State redshirt freshman goalkeeper Cameron Illingworth finished with a career-high six saves for the night.
The Wildcats capped the evening with a season-high 10 total shots but were only able to put one on goal. Texas held the advantage in total shots, 20-10, including a 13-1 lead in shots on goal. K-State registered a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
K-State returns to Buser Family Park next week, as the Wildcats host Oklahoma on Friday, October 9, at 5 p.m. Tickets for Friday's match will be available on Friday morning at 8 a.m.
Friday's game will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. It will also be on 101.5 KROCK in Manhattan and for free at kstatesports.com.
