K-State Retains KU-KSU-WSU Triangular Title on Saturday

Jan 16, 2021 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kansas – With a whopping 17 total victories, the Kansas State track and field teams routed both Kansas and Wichita State with 261 points to capture its second-straight KU-KSU-WSU Triangular title inside Ahearn Field House on Saturday (January 16) afternoon. The Wildcats were led by senior catalyst Tejaswin Shankar - who competed in five events - and clinched 25 points to earn the "High Point Scorer" award.

"The nature of international scoring, with everybody scoring, it makes it quite hard to gap people," said Director of Track and Track and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "When you have a margin like we did here today, it is indicative of our performance. A lot of really fine marks. I thought the quality of the marks, in a normal year, would've been good. But this year, the quality of the marks I thought was really good."

Pulling out a 33-point win in Wichita during the 2020 showdown, K-State nearly doubled that performance on Saturday afternoon, as both teams combined to power their way to a 58-point spread over runner-up Wichita State. A plethora of the Wildcats' score poured in from the jump events, as the team tallied 64 points, which also included six first-place finishes.
Three of those victories came from Shankar, who found himself with a heavy workload for the annual dual between in-state rivals, and he did not shy away from the opportunity as the New Delhi, India, product earned the top spots in the men's long jump (7.28m/23-10.75), triple jump (15.73m/51-7.25) and high jump (2.15m/7-0.50) events. He continued to showcase his athleticism in the men's 60-meter hurdles (8.17) and shot-put (12.17m/39-11.25) events, as he added four points to his grand total of 25.

"The triangular is the one meet where you do it for the team in a dual-score meet," said Shankar. "Overall, I think it was a really good performance. I think I did what I needed to do this week. The triple jump was the one big takeaway for me. I just wanted to do it for the team and for Coach (Rovelto)."

Rovelto gave his thoughts on Shankar's busy day.

"He is in an extremely heavy training load right now," said Rovelto. "He handled it very well today. Given what he did in all of the events, his performance was pretty special."

While Shankar took the reins on the men's side, the women's team tallied the three other wins for the jump events against the Jayhawks and the Shockers, which were accomplished by freshman Rhianna Phipps, junior Chantoba Bright and sophomore Maddie Righter.

Phipps planted herself in the sand during the long jump event at 6.09m/19-11.75, which gave her the outright win inside Ahearn Field House. Her long-jump victory also marked the 10th-best outing in school history. Righter nailed a new personal best in the high jump, as she leaped over the bar at 1.78m/5-10.00 to score a pivotal win for K-State. As a newcomer, Bright has burst on the scene in the triple jump, and today was no different for the Wismar, Linden, Guyana native. With a jump of 12.64m/41-5.75, Bright locked up the win and edged out teammate Taishia Pryce, who tallied a mark of 12.41m/40-8.75.

Those who competed on the track displayed great athleticism in the latter portion of the triangular, which featured another record-setting performance from freshman Kyle Gale. Gale collected his third-straight meet record of the season, as he blazed around the track in 47.42 seconds to win the 400 meters. His time broke former Wildcat Tyrone Watkins' pace of 47.88 in the meet.
Junior Kassidy Johnson keeps building her repertoire on the track with her victory in the mile run at a time of 4:57.63.  Johnson has now compiled at least one win in three different events for the indoor season, as she has put her stamp on the 800 meters and 1000-meter races thus far in 2020-21.

She also earned another win during the 800 meters, as the Wichita, Kansas, native posted a time of 2:14.38. Johnson edged out Ally Ryan of Kansas with less than a second to spare (2:14.50).

Underclassmen ran away with victories in the 60 and 400-meter races, with both freshman Shalysa Wray and sophomore O'shalia Johnson obtaining seven points of their own. Wray's victory even bumped her up into the top 10 all-time in school history for the 60 meters, as her time of 7.51 seconds locked her in the seventh-overall spot.

"The competition was really good," said Wray. "I have been really been working on my starts for this race. I would say that my start was not the best, but I did better than last time. I just need to go back and work harder for my next race, which I am very excited about."

Her effort in the 60 meters translated over to another event for the Grand Caymans, Cayman Islands, native, with a remarkable outing in the 200 meters near the end of the meet. Wray corralled a time of 24.52 seconds, which was good for second place and just behind Taishia Pryce, who bounced back from a defeat in the triple jump and recorded the top sprint of 24.36 seconds to seal the win.

In the 400 meters, Johnson jolted around Ward Haylett Track in 56.21 seconds to separate K-State even further from the pack at the top of the leaderboard.

Another junior, Vitoria Alves, blasted out of the gates in the 60-meter hurdles, which resulted in her second-straight win in as many meets, as the product of Sao Paulo, Brazil, crossed the finish line at 8.27 seconds, which was just off her NCAA-leading mark of 8.22 seconds.
Conquering the weight throw competition, senior Shaelyn Ward doused any hopes for the rest of field with a mark of 18.71m/61-4.75, as she cemented her spot at the top on Saturday's leaderboard.
Many Wildcats brought home runner-up finishes to help widen the margin between Wichita State and Kansas. Those who provided an extra cushion for K-State this weekend with second-place outings included sophomore Tim Lambert Jr., (600 Yards), senior Kyle Alcine (High Jump), sophomore Devon Richardson (Triple Jump), senior Wurrie Njadoe (60 Meters), junior Alex Ferguson (600 Yards), sophomore Hannah Stewart (3000 Meters), junior Lavaun Stephenson (60-Meter Hurdles), sophomore Urte Bacianskaite (Shot Put) and freshman Jasmine Greer (Weight Throw)

K-State will now venture out of Manhattan for the first time this indoor season, as the team travels to Lawrence, Kansas, for the Jayhawk Classic, which takes place on Friday, January 22 through Saturday, January 23. This is the first time since the 2018-19 campaign the Wildcats will compete inside the Anschultz Pavilion.

"We will have a lot of people off next week," Rovelto said. "Like I said, we have had people who have competed in three meets already this year. Most of the country, this was their opening weekend. So, they need some rest. Total loads, training loads, are going to start gradually increasing. What made a lot of the performances today so special was that they have been training very hard. We have outstanding marks under those conditions, that says something."
