K-State, Kansas Draw in Dillons Sunflower Showdown
Mar 13, 2021 | Soccer
LAWRENCE, Kansas – Making her second career start, K-State freshman goalkeeper Peyton Pearson kept (rv/25) Kansas off the scoreboard and secured a 0-0 draw at Rock Chalk Park on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats have now recorded a shutout in three of its last four matches.
Pearson, making her second start in K-State's last three matches, pocketed her second career shutout with five saves while facing 14 total Kansas shots.
"She is showing confidence and giving our coaching staff a lot more confidence in the goalkeeper position," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini. "She has garnered two shutouts in two games. That speaks volumes. That is great to have a keeper of that caliber with that ability and confidence to come in and do the big things on the big stage. It is great to have her and help us keep growing this program."
A product of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Pearson has registered 200 minutes of scoreless soccer between the pipes for K-State to begin her career. She is the second K-State goalkeeper to record two shutouts in her first two starts for the Wildcats, joining Miranda Larkin in the 2016 season when she held SIUE and Oakland scoreless.
With her five saves on Saturday, Pearson has 14 saves on the season.
In the first half, Kansas (6-3-2) threatened with a header off a corner kick in the 26th minute, but Pearson pushed the attempt over the bar to keep the match scoreless.
K-State (3-7-1) quickly built its attack and in the 29th minute 2020 All-Big 12 First Team selection Brookelynn Entz almost broke the tie. Entz fired a shot which found the right post and caromed off the back of Kansas goalkeeper Sarah Peters. Peters recovered to prevent the ball from rolling in.
In the first overtime, Pearson stopped the best chance at a game-winner for the Jayhawks with a leaping save in the 94th minute.
In the second overtime, the Wildcats had three chances to seal the win but just missed. Entz threatened the upper right corner in the 105th minute. Sophomore defender Aliyah El-Naggar followed Entz's attempt with a low shot to the lower right of the goal in the 107th minute, but Peters made the stop. In the 109th minute, sophomore Kyler Goins just missed with a shot over the bar.
"I am proud of the girls today," said Dibbini about his team's performance. "I wish they would have had the opportunity to get one of those shots to go in. We had some clear chances, but just couldn't tuck it away. I couldn't be more proud of our team effort today, offensively and defensively."
This was the first draw in the series between K-State and Kansas. The draw ends a four-match winning streak for the Jayhawks between the schools. This was K-State's first draw since a 0-0 decision at CSUN on September 6, 2019.
Dibbini credits Saturday's result to a change in the formation from last week's match against the Jayhawks.
"We wanted to minimize their superiority in the middle of the field. We also tried to prevent them from having time on the ball with their defenders. We didn't want their defense to find a rhythm with their passing from the back like they did last week. We also tried to press them a little more and force them to play closer to their own goal. We knew we would generate our offense through our defense. It worked. The first 10, 15 minutes I was a little worried. I knew it would be a challenge to throw a new formation and incorporate it in a week, but I felt like once we got through the early stage of the game and the game settled down we gained our composure and we got better as the game went along in this formation. Even when they played with three in the back in the final overtime, we controlled the rest of the game."
For its next competition, K-State will play Kansas City NWSL in a closed friendly on Saturday, March 20, at Swope Soccer Village in Overland Park.
K-State's next non-conference match will be Sunday, March 28, at Missouri. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
