Jayhawks Snag Pair of Second Half Goals to Fell Wildcats

Mar 06, 2021 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – In the first-ever non-conference match between K-State and Kansas, the Jayhawks came out on top with a pair of second half goals to secure a 2-0 win in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown at Buser Family Park on Saturday night.

"We had some chances, and if we can put one of those away early and we take the first punch as far as scoring the first goal, the game could be different," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini on the result. "We had our chances. They had their chances. They got the first one and I knew it was going to come down to whoever scores first was going to get the 'W', so hopefully we can build on it and get it rolling next week."

Following a scoreless first half, K-State (3-7-0, 3-6-0 Big 12) threatened to go in front in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Freshman Maddie Weichel attempted a shot from outside the penalty area on the left side of the field in the 57th minute, which was saved in the middle of the net by Kansas goalkeeper Sarah Peters.

In the 65th minute, 2020 All-Big 12 First Team selection Brookelynn Entz split a pair of Kansas defenders to get inside the Kansas 18-yard box. She put a solid boot into an attempt from 12 yards, but it caught a Jayhawk defender on the heal and deflected out of bounds.

"Honestly, I felt like the second half we played better," said Entz about the play of the Wildcats in the spring debut. "We had more chances and they opened up the scoring and once that happens, floodgates kind of opened. But I thought we played way better in the second half than I did in the first half. We had the ball more and had more chances."

Kansas (6-3-1, 5-3-1 Big 12) broke the tie in the 68th minute on a goal by Rylan Childers. The Wildcats misplayed a clearance in its own 18-yard box. The ball fell at the feet of Kailey Lane. She sent a pass across the mouth of the K-State goal from the right post, finding the foot of Childers who won the race to the left post.

The Jayhawks tallied an insurance goal in the 77th minute. Samantha Barnett crossed a ball to the center of the field, 10-yards from K-State's goal. Shira Elinav put her head on the pass and redirected the ball into the net.

K-State ended the night with eight shots, including three on goal. Kansas notched 12 shots with four on goal. Leading K-State with two shots apiece were Weichel, Kursten von Klahr and Presli Pearson

Von Klahr made her K-State debut in the starting lineup, the first start of her collegiate career. Von Klahr brought the crowd to its feet in the 11th minute of the first half, as she sent a dart from 25 yards which forced Peters to push the ball over the bar for a K-State corner.

"She did a good job of winning her battles in the middle and creating chances for us and playing with some good composure," said Dibbini about the transfer from NC State. "I think, as she keeps developing her chemistry with the players, she has a lot more growth that will continue to get better."

Von Klahr was also pleased with her debut in purple.

"I think we are still getting used to playing with each other, but I really like the effort that we put into tonight. We won a lot of balls and put up a good fight and can only get better from here as we get more comfortable with each other and keep playing."

K-State will reciprocate tonight's visit from Kansas, with a return trip next Saturday, March 13, to Rock Chalk Park at 12 p.m.

What They Said
MIKE DIBBINI, HEAD COACH

On the second half…
"You have to pay attention to the details for 90 minutes at this level, but we played hard and did the right things and had some chances. We made a mistake on a ball out of the air, and put them in a position to have the one good opportunity to tuck it away and took our breath away a little bit there. When that happened, they built momentum and got another one within the next ten minutes. Overall, first match, lot of different personnel players that we tried to get in there and inserted in there. They stepped up and did a good job, and we have a lot to work with and have to get them next week. Hopefully we can build on from this and move on to the next one."

On trying to break through against KU…
"We had some chances, and if we can put one of those away early and we take the first punch as far as scoring the first goal, the game could be different. We had our chances, they had their chances. They got the first one and I knew it was going to come down to whoever scores first was going to get the 'W', so hopefully we can build on it and get it rolling next week."

On the difference between playing in the fall and spring…
"Typically in a spring match we are looking to develop individually and as a team and work on the things that we need to work on. The biggest difference going from the fall to the spring is we are really thin in the personnel, and field players especially for 90 minutes at this level. As you can see, we competed hard but we kind of ran out of gas a little bit, and didn't have enough players in the rotation to get players in and out and breathers, so we have to manage the game a little bit different."

On Kursten Von Klahr…
"She did a good job of winning her battles in the middle, and creating chances for us and playing with some good composure. I think as she keeps developing her chemistry with the players, she has a lot more growth that will continue to get better. And I think the same thing with Aliyah (El-Naggar), just it's a matter of developing a little more chemistry at this level, experience is major and we lost three or four seniors that were playing together, it's hard to replace. But I felt like our players, especially Aliyah and Kursten, did a really good job of blending in and giving us good, solid minutes."

On the team's mindset…
"We understand they are countable matches, and we just have to come in and be ready to compete and continue to work off the momentum we had in the fall."

BROOKELYNN ENTZ, SENIOR MIDFIELDER

On the second half...
"Honestly, I felt like the second half we played better. We had more chances and they opened up the scoring and once that happens, floodgates kind of opened. But I thought we played way better in the second half then I did in the first half. We had the ball more and had more chances."

On the difference between the spring and fall...
"We didn't have very much time to prepare. We only had this week basically to prepare for this game when normally in the fall we'll have a whole preseason and exhibition matches before. I know they had an exhibition match before, so they could work out the kinks and we didn't."

On returning to play for K-State…
"I love being back. I'm super happy to be back. I know I made the right decision. We are just going to keep working and get better and win games."

KURSTEN VON KLAHR, JUNIOR DEFENDER

On her first game as a Wildcat...
"It was good. I think we are still getting used to playing with each other, but I really like the effort that we put into tonight. We won a lot of balls and put up a good fight and can only get better from here as we get more comfortable with each other and keep playing."

On the team's mindset during the spring season…
"It's important that we go into every week knowing that this is real. It's a continuation of last season, but with some new players. It starts in practice with being focused everyday and showing up for game day ready to fight."

On the second half…
"We are going to have to look over in film. Good thing we get to play them next week and learn from what happened and we'll have to get better next week."

On playing with Bailey Nemechek and Brookelynn Entz in the midfield…
"So far we've worked really well together in practice. Soccer is a game of being comfortable with each other and like I said, the more we keep playing the better it's going to get and I'm excited."

On what she brings to the team…
"I like to think that I can win balls in the midfield to give it to players up front like Kyler (Goins) and Brookelynn and Maddie (Weichel) on the outside, so being disruptive in the midfield and winning balls so that I can find the outlet up front and let those players look to score."
