Anderson’s Late Goal Sends K-State to Third Straight Win
Aug 29, 2021 | Soccer
CLARKSVILLE, Tennessee – On the 24th shot on Sunday afternoon for K-State, freshman Adah Anderson recorded the only goal of the match in the 90th minute sending K-State to its third straight win with a 1-0 margin over North Alabama at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field on the campus of Austin Peay.
This was the first time K-State (3-1-0) has won two matches away from home in the same weekend.
"We've never been able to do what we've done this weekend," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini about the wins this weekend. "Any win at this level is tough. Winning is hard, we know that, but getting on the road and doing it twice, especially on an adverse Sunday like we had today shows the growth in our program, a level of maturity and the leadership of our players. I'm just excited for the girls right now. Yes, we have a lot of challenges in front of us, but we know winning is hard and we'll take this."
With temperatures in the low 90s, K-State dominated action in the second half by piling up a 17-2 advantage in total shots. With the seconds of regulation ticking down, K-State switched the possession from one side of the field to the other.
Aliyah El-Naggar raced the ball up the field and found Adah Anderson. Anderson's first attempt hit the crossbar but she ran through the rebound and finished the winner unimpeded.
"It was kind of a blur," said Anderson about the winner. "I saw Aliyah running down the line and I knew I had to try to do anything I could to put it in. So honestly, just props to Aliyah for working that hard to give me a tap in."
Anderson is no stranger to late goals on the road for the Wildcats. During K-State's exhibition win at South Dakota State on August 12, Anderson scored both goals in the final 10 minutes of K-State's 2-1 win in Brookings.
Sophomore Peyton Pearson made her second start of the season and recorded her second win and shutout of 2021. Pearson needed just one save, with the stop coming midway through the first half.
The product of Tulsa, Oklahoma, owns four career shutouts in six career starts. She ranks third in school history for career shutouts and owns a career goals against average of 0.51, which is the lowest in school history.
Between Pearson and Alaina Werremeyer, K-State has an active shutout stretch of 298:55 which extends back to the final 29 minutes of action against Weber State. With the third straight shutout, this is tied for the most consecutive shutouts in program history.
Sunday's match marked the fourth straight match this season K-State has recorded 20 or more shots in a game, as the Wildcats held a 24-4 lead in total shots and a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. K-State also led in corner kicks, 8-1.
K-State continues its five-match road trip with a stop in the Rocky Mountains. The Wildcats face 2020-21 Summit League champions, Denver, on Thursday at 8 p.m. (CDT). The match can be followed through live stats at kstatesports.com and on Twitter, @KStateSOC.
Following the match with the Pioneers, K-State will then travel to Fort Collins, Colorado, to tangle with Colorado State on Sunday, September 5, at 1 p.m. (CDT). Sunday's match will air online on Mountain West Network.
