Wildcats Drop 2-0 Decision at Texas Tech

Sep 26, 2021 | Soccer

LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite a shot advantage in the second half, K-State was unable to pull the upset on Sunday afternoon at John Walker Soccer Complex, as Texas Tech used a pair of first half goals to down the Wildcats, 2-0.

"I thought we played a good game, it's just, in the big moments or key moments of the game, we cut ourselves or dig ourselves another hole," said head coach Mike Dibbini about Sunday's match. "That can't happen against good teams. We just can't do that. We have got to figure out ways to continue to get better, but we played a really good game we just did it against a really good opponent and they capitalized on their chances and we just couldn't do the same."

K-State (5-6-0, 0-2-0) threatened the Red Raiders with an 11-9 advantage in shots, including a 4-3 lead in shots on goal in the second half. Freshman Adah Anderson and junior Roo Yarnell-Williams each fired off threatening shots but were unable to find the netting. Anderson led the Wildcats with three shots, including a career-best effort of two on goal.

Dibbini has been pleased with the performance of Anderson, a midfielder from Kansas City, Missouri, this season.

"She does a nice job staying really confident on the ball and comfortable. She has a really high IQ to make plays for us, especially in the big moments, so her upside is extremely high and we're excited about what she's going to continue to do for us."

Texas Tech (9-1-1, 2-0-0 Big 12) captured the lead in the 6th minute. Kirsten Davis outran a pair of K-State defenders to collect the ball just outside the 18-yard box. After a pair of dribbles, Davis fired with her right foot and nestled the shot inside the left post for the 1-0 lead.

The Red Raiders added an insurance tally in the 35th minute. Ashleigh Williams collected a K-State turnover in the Wildcat defensive zone. She took a few dribbles to the top of the 18-yard box and fired into the lower left corner for the 2-0 lead.

K-State sophomore goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer made five saves on the afternoon. This was her sixth career match with five or more saves.

For the afternoon, Texas Tech edged K-State in total shots, 16-13, and shots on goal, 7-5. The Red Raiders held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

K-State returns to the state of Kansas on Thursday, as the Wildcats face Kansas in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown on Thursday, September 30 at 7 p.m., in Lawrence. Thursday's match will be available on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
