Jan 14, 2022 | Track & Field

LAWRENCE, Kan. – For the third straight year, the Kansas State track and field team was the overall winner on Friday (January 14) at the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular. The Wildcats earned 15 first place finishes at the Anschutz Sports Pavilion in Lawrence, Kansas with fifth-year senior Tejaswin Shankar earning the "High Point Scorer" award with 21 points in four events.

K-State ended the evening with 246 points while Kansas earned 240 points and Wichita State had 183 points.

"As far as I am concerned, it is important for our team to compete well in scored competition," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "We have to learn how to compete head-to-head and to continue to improve at competing head-to-head. We, like other schools, were without athletes due to COVID-19, injuries, etc., but you have to compete at your best with what you have. I think we competed pretty well, and we did have some outstanding performances for this early in the season."

Starting off the afternoon strong was sophomore and LSU transfer Emma Robbins, Robbins finished the women's weight throw in first place with a mark of 20.20m/66-03.25. Sophomore Emily Fuhr came in second place with a throw of 19.35m/63-6, a new personal-best. Closing out the weight throw for the women was sophomore Jasmine Greer with a personal-best mark of 18.76m/61-6.75, earning third overall.

Jumping to a height of 1.68m/5-6 in the women's high jump was freshman Madelyn McCabe and came in third place for K-State. Junior Urte Bacianskaite clinched fifth place with a mark of 1.63m/5-4.25.

"Winning is important and we will take them however we can get them," stated Rovelto. "These types of competitions are the heart of our sport, and they are slowly disappearing, which is not good. We value this meet and will always attempt to do our best when it rolls around. I believe the other schools feel the same way and this is what makes it special. We have a long ways to go to be the conference and national team we want to be so we need to continue to work hard."
