K-State Ends Steve Miller Invitational With 15 First-Place Marks

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field team ended their final meet before the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships on a strong note with 15 first-place finishes out of 21 events at the Steve Miller Invitational on Friday (February 18) at the Ahearn Field House.
 
"We had a handful of personal-bests and first-places, that's good to have," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "You want people performing at their best at the end of the season, so that is a good thing. A lot of people that competed today, this will be the culminating meet of their indoor season. For them, it was a bigger deal than some might think. We also had some good performances by people that will be competing next week."
 
Earning first-place marks at the Steve Miller invitational were senior Tommi Hintnaus (pole vault, 4.05m/13-3.50), fifth-year senior Kyle Alcine (high jump, 2.10m/6-10.75), junior Donovan Turner (60-meter hurdles, 8.10), junior Jaybe Shufelberger (mile run, 5:02.58), junior Urte Bacianskaite (60-meter hurdles, 9.18), sophomore Nathan Hassed (60-meter, 7.04), junior Kindel Nordhus (400-meter, 1:01.50), freshman Carl af Forselles, (pole vault, 5.00m/16-4.75), Jessica Caraway (600-yard, 1:32.96), sophomore Will Carroll (600-yard, 1:17.22), junior Kassidy Johnson (800-meter, 2:06.51), junior Hadley Splechter, (800-meter, 1:53.80), junior Kyle Johnston (1,000-meter, 2:26.95), junior Katie Kasunic (3,000-meter, 10:32.84) and junior Jack Moore (3,000-meter, 8:42.29)
 
In the women's pole vault, sophomore Reagun Hukill jumped to 3.60m/11-9.75 and clinched second place.
 
Earning personal-bests and first- and second-place finishes in the women's weight throw were unattached sophomore Monique Hardy and sophomore Lacey Pavlak. Hardy threw to a first-place mark of 22.71m/74-6.25 (1st), while Pavlak heaved a throw of 17.81m/58-5.25 to finish second.
 
Junior Cailan Steward ran a new personal-best time of 5:10.26 and came in second in the women's mile, right behind Shufelberger.
 
Second place went to sophomore Madelyn McCabe in the women's 60-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 9.26.
 
Concluding the men's mile in first place with a personal-best time of 4:09.16 was unattached competitor and fifth-year senior Noah Stevenson. In second place was freshman Thomas Hazen (4:18.04) followed by junior Stephen Kielhofner in third (4:21.57).
 
Shortly behind Hassed in the men's 60-meter dash was freshman Prithviraj Chougule in fifth place (7.19) and senior Cameron Key in ninth (7.43).
 
In the women's high jump, third place went to junior Madeline Righter with a height of 1.55m/5-1.
 
Rounding out the men's pole vault behind Forsalles was sophomore Jesse Pinkley in second place with a height of 4.75m/15-7, followed by sophomore Brian Simon in third (4.60m/15-1).
 
Four Wildcats competed in the women's shot put event. A second-place finish by sophomore Grace Thompson with a personal-best heave of 14.01m/45-11.75 highlighted the event. Bacianskaite was next in the shot put in third (13.96m/45-9.75) followed by sophomore Jaycee Schroeder in fifth (13.52m/44-4.25) and McCabe in seventh (12.31m/40-4.75).
 
K-State had three competitors in the men's shot put with sophomore Jackson Gibbon leading the way. The Buckley, Washington native threw to a length of 15.39m/50-6, claiming fifth place overall. Sixth and seventh place went to freshman Darius O'Connell (15.20m/49-10.20, PR) and senior Matas Adamonis (15.03m/49-3.75).
 
Senior Alex Ferguson (2nd, 2:09.22), fifth-year senior Macy Heinz (3rd, 2:11.09) and junior Sydney Burton (4th, 2:11.10) ran in the women's 800-meter behind Johnson.
 
Concluding the day was junior Gabriel Louw in the 400-meter (2nd, 51.95), sophomore Jack Vincent (2nd, 2:28.03) and sophomore Ryan Derry (4th, 2:30.00) in the men's 1,000-meter and junior Helen Giefer (2nd, 10:35.57) and freshman Kate Kowalik (3rd, 10:41.70) in the women's 3,000-meter.
 
The Wildcats will travel back to Ames, Iowa for the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday (February 25) and Saturday (February 26). Events will commence on Friday at 10 a.m., CT with the 60-meter hurdles of the women's pentathlon and Saturday at 11 a.m., CT with the 60-meter hurdles of the men's heptathlon.
