Sheaff Registers Career Night, as K-State Battles Seventh-Ranked BYU

Oct 09, 2023 | Soccer

PROVO, Utah – K-State used a career night from sophomore goalkeeper Murphy Sheaff in its upset bid, however seventh-ranked BYU secured its first Big 12 home win on Monday night with a pair of late second half goals at South Field for a 2-0 result.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sheaff finished the match with a career-high 12 saves. Her 12 saves were the most in a match this season by any goalkeeper in the Big 12. She tied for the second-most saves in a match in program history and were the most since Alaina Werremeyer set the school record with 13 against Baylor on October 10, 2021.
- K-State (3-9-3, 1-5-1 Big 12) kept the nation's number one offense (3.4 goals per game) off the scoreboard in the first half. Sheaff, while staring into the sunset on the east-west oriented field, registered seven saves and her defensive mates blocked a number of other shots.
- Sheaff's seven first half saves were the most by a K-State goalkeeper in a Big 12 first half since Werremeyer tallied eight on October 10, 2021. Sheaff's seven saves tied her season-high of seven which she had achieved twice before Monday night.
- BYU (11-1-3, 4-0-3) held a 23-2 advantage in total shots and a 7-1 lead in shots on goal at the end of the first 45 minutes.
- The Cougars would eventually score, doing so on its 32nd shot of the night in the 76th minute. Allie Fryer back heeled a slow rolling pass to the left post for the 1-0 lead.
- BYU scored an insurance goal in the 83rd minute, as Kendell Petersen found the lower right corner with a shot.
- The Cougars ended the night with a 38-6 advantage in total shots and a 14-1 edge in shots on goal.

FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini

On Murphy Sheaff's performance...
"A really nice job. She came up with save after save and kept us in the game."

On the match overall...
"We played a really, really good BYU team on the road. Great environment. I'm proud of our players. We competed hard for 90 minutes we just didn't get the result and I get that, but we came in and played hard and made them earn the three points. We did everything we could to try to compete which we did. I couldn't be more proud of our effort tonight."

On the defensive game plan...
"They executed the game plan in the first half. We knew they were going to come at us a lot more in the second half. We escaped first half scoreless. We tried to throw a little bit of a counter attack against them in the second half and we transitioned to our attack a little bit better. We had some opportunities, but just couldn't execute our chances. We stayed organized defensively and over-communicated and then tried to get them in transition moments."
