Wildcats Drop Road Matchup with Sooners

NORMAN, Oklahoma – K-State looked to pocket a road win over Oklahoma on Thursday night at John Crain Field, but the Wildcats were unable to overcome an unfortunate bounce in the opening minutes as the Sooners carded a 2-0 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- K-State (2-5-3, 0-1-1 Big 12) went down early, as Oklahoma (5-4-1, 1-0-1) scored in the second minute. The Sooners served a corner kick that found the head of Cailey England. England redirected the ball and hit the bottom of the crossbar. The ball fell to the ground and struck the turf a grass blade past the goal line for the 1-0 Oklahoma lead.
- The best chance in the first half came from freshman Morgan Struttmann in the 35th minute. Struttmann took a pair of touches in the middle of the field before firing from 20 yards. Her attempt hit the right post and bounced across the goal mouth.
- In the 53rd minute, K-State was victimized by bad luck. Oklahoma served in a free kick from the right side of the field. As the ball sailed in front of the K-State goal, a Wildcat deflected the ball past K-State goalkeeper Murphy Sheaff to put the Sooners in front, 2-0.
- The Sooners outshot K-State, 13-10, however K-State held a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. Oklahoma registered a 12-6 advantage in corner kicks.

"It felt like we didn't have the same urgency in the first half like we did in the second. That first goal they scored in the first minute deflated us a little. It was one of those ones that you didn't expect to go in. It was tough that both goals were scored in unfortunate ways on set pieces. One was a close call and then the second one was an unlucky. The run of play was okay but we can't give up set pieces and then not execute defensively."
On playing with possession in first half...
"We got some chances. We just didn't execute our chances. I thought there was a lot more urgency there when our backs were against the wall and we were down. We just didn't execute our chances offensively."
On emphasizing urgency early in matches...
"I think just from a leadership standpoint, from my standpoint, as a coaching staff, we're okay with doing what we can and putting our best effort with the X's and O's. But the energy and the effort and the desire has to be at the front of the table every single time. And I felt like without that, at this level, you get punished for those mistakes and we were punished for our mistakes tonight."
