K-State Tripped Up at West Virginia

Sep 19, 2024 | Soccer

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – K-State looked to pick up its first Big 12 win of the season on Thursday night at West Virginia. The Mountaineers successfully defended the turf at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium with a 2-0 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- West Virginia (6-2-1, 2-0-0 Big 12) went ahead in the 41st minute. The Mountaineers' Chloe Adler attempted a shot from just inside the 18-yard box, but it deflected off the right post and back to the foot of a wide-open AJ Rodriguez who finished into the top of the open frame.
- The Mountaineers scored off a header by Lisa Schoppl in the 77th minute. The attempt came off a free kick service that landed seven yards from the K-State (3-5-1, 0-2-0 Big 12) frame. Schoppl's header found an inch of space inside the left post.
- K-State junior goalkeeper Murphy Sheaff made six saves on the night. This was Sheaff's fifth match this season and the 13th of her K-State career with five or more saves.

FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini

On the bench changing the tempo of the match in the first half...
"I just think we had a pretty solid first half. We gave up a goal late that was an unlucky bounce. In the second half, we didn't stay focused on our identity in the way of how we want to play and to create our chances. We have got to be able to create a lot more offense, drive the ball into the box, some way, somehow, to give us more chances. Give us more corner kicks, more cutbacks and stuff. And we're just not seeing it. We're not forcing it in there. We are a little too passive on the attack. We have got to be better in the attack. We have got to take more risks, like we did in our last match. I mean, that's what created more chances for us. We just lacked the risk tonight."

On trying to get the match to halftime scoreless...
"Absolutely. We just couldn't get it to half tied. And so we couldn't make those adjustments, and it's hard at this level, when you're down 1-0. You're pushing and you're chasing a game and they get another one later."

On if the absence of Kenzi Gillispie resulted in the second goal...
"Of course, we're always going to miss Kenzi Gillespie. I need to go back and watch video and see what happened. I know that they (K-State defenders) thought there was a little bit of a shove in there, but it might have been missed, I don't know, so I need to see the video to be sure."

On what the message is to the team to come away with three points on the road trip...
"Focus, regroup and continue to play with the same identity that we've been playing minus what we did tonight, as far as, the mindset of the attack. We can't give up goals that break our momentum and stay positive and play with an attacking mindset."
