K-State Comeback Falls Short on Sunday

Sep 22, 2024 | Soccer

CINCINNATI, Ohio – K-State registered an early second half goal to square Sunday's Big 12 match at Gettler Stadium, but Cincinnati found the winner in the 68th minute to down the Wildcats, 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- K-State (3-6-1, 0-3-0 Big 12), trailing 1-0 at halftime, squared the match just 40 seconds into the second half. Sophomore Jo Sees played a ball back to junior midfielder Paige Dickson who trailed the initial attack. Dickson, attempting K-State's first shot of the afternoon, booted her left-footed attempt from 28 yards into the upper right corner for her first career goal.
- This was the second assist of the season for Sees.
- Cincinnati (5-4-1, 1-2-0 Big 12)  retook the lead, 2-1, in the 68th minute. A slotted ball played Coley Sidloski onside and behind the K-State defense. Sidloski's shot found the twine in the left corner from 16 yards.
- The Bearcats ended the afternoon with a 15-3 advantage in total shots, including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal.
- K-State junior goalkeeper Murphy Sheaff made five saves on the day. This was Sheaff's sixth match this season and the 14th of her K-State career with five or more saves.

FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini

On message at halftime to generate the early second half goal...
"We just talked to them about making sure that we play with more urgency, with an attitude, care that we want to be out here and compete. Compete harder, just motivating things that needed to be done and said in the locker room. But even before I got in there, I think the girls understood that and knew what needed to be done as they were conversing with each other."

On the momentum of the match in the second half...
"I thought the momentum kept shifting back and forth. Whoever scored had the momentum for the next few moments. We grabbed the momentum early in the second half, and then once they scored the second it broke our backs there for a little bit of time. It was a game of momentum for the final 45. I didn't think we had a good first half in terms of urgency, and I thought we played much better in the second half. But it's still not there for us with our shot count. We have to take more risks in the attack. To give ourselves more luck and give us more opportunities than we did today with our two shots on goal."
