K-State’s Unbeaten Streak Comes to an End on Sunday

Sep 07, 2025 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – In a matchup of Power 4 unbeatens, K-State saw its school record unbeaten streak come to an end at five as Nebraska notched a 2-0 win on Sunday afternoon at Hibner Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- K-State (4-1-1) had the first opportunity to go on top in the 2nd minute. Sophomore forward Rilyn Rintoul was hauled down just outside the 18-yard box on the right side of the box. After video review, Rintoul was just outside the penalty area. The Wildcat attempt on the free kick was cleared away.
- The Wildcats registered its first shot on goal in the 37th minute, as sophomore Hannah Palmer attempted a shot from 20 yards that was saved in the middle of the net.
- Nebraska (5-0-2) had an opportunity to take the lead in the 44th minute on a shot from the left of the Wildcat net. The attempt from Ellie Felt was a rising attempt from 18 yards but Maddie Sibbing dove and punched the ball away from the upper right corner for her only save of the first half.
- Despite being outshot 4-2 in the first half, K-State had 50 percent of the possession and recorded 63 percent of its time in possession in the attacking half of the field.
- The Huskers went on top in the 55th minute, as Nebraska took advantage of a K-State misplay. The Huskers collected the ball 35 yards from the frame and proceeded to cross a pass to Kayma Carpenter at the left post who scored from three yards into the left corner.
- The goal ended K-State's consecutive shutout minutes streak at 504:07, a school record.
- Nebraska added its second goal in the 59th minutes, as Carpenter was again played a cross at the left post and she finished the pass with a header from five yards.
- K-State ended the afternoon with an 11-10 advantage in total shots, including a 9-6 lead in the second half, however Nebraska registered a 6-4 edge in shots on goal.
- For the match, Nebraska held possession for 51 percent of the match, however of K-State's 49 percent possession, 66 percent came in the attacking half of the field.

FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Colleen Corbin
On the offensive tempo in the first half...
"I thought it was a really competitive match, which we knew it was going to be, and we were excited to play someone of Nebraska's caliber that was going to test us more physically, again, force us to solve different problems. I thought we generated a couple really good chances. But to your point, like nothing that felt super, super dangerous, which is, again, normal in these types of matches, right? You're not just going to generate 20 shots, and have half of them be awesome. We have to continue to fight to find better chances and to not settle for half chances. Everyone wants to generate more offensively than we might have done today, but I feel like today was a really even match up. I think us continuing to have the ball in our attacking half for a majority of the game, other than maybe the last 15 minutes of the match. Like it's positive for us. We didn't have to weather a whole lot other than that six minute stretch that got really uncomfortable. So overall, again, I think we're really happy, but we've talked about in the past, like good teams will punish you for not being switched on 100% of the time, and I think that's what happened today, and it's a good lesson for us to learn now."

On the end of the shutout streak...
"I told the team after the game like it was unrealistic for us to expect that we're never going to get scored on. We're always going to fight to earn shutouts, and we're always going to value keeping the ball out of the back of the net. But we also can't get in our feelings when we do give up a goal, because then they will score a second one. And I think that is exactly what happened. I think we felt a little sorry for ourself, and they punished us again. And I think we deserve to get scored on again, quite frankly. So it's a good lesson for us to learn. It's a tough pill to swallow, because I think if you could run it back and do it again, you know, I think we at least deserve a tie again outside of that six-minute stretch. But I also think we generated a couple really dangerous chances that maybe we win the game. So it's why the sport is what it is, and it can be cruel sometimes, but I think again, it's a good lesson for the group to learn now, heading into our last non-conference game at home and preparing to play a very competitive, Big 12 Conference schedule."

On Jayce Woodward making her return from injury and season debut at Nebraska...
"I mean, that's a big ask. She is one year and one day removed from her surgery, which you know, to then step in mid non-conference, almost end of the non-conference schedule, and play against Nebraska on the road. It's a big ask, but Jayce is a competitive kid, and she has a really high soccer IQ, and I know she's been watching her friends play soccer since the season started, and has been chomping at the bit to get on the field. And so it's fun, fun to give her the opportunity and get her back out there. I think she's going to be a key role player for us as we get down this stretch, and just good to have her back and proud of the work that she's done to put herself in a position to be competitive."
On her excitement to see how the team will respond this week...
"I told the team at the end of the game, just as I was would expect them, as humans, to not dwell on what is happening to me. It's how I respond. We want the same out of them as athletes and so again, it's a good lesson in individual moments, but also as a group, collectively, like if we want to sit around and feel sorry for ourselves, then the road is going to be long ahead. If we're able to have the capacity to not feel sorry for ourselves, not play the blame game, take some accountability for the things that we maybe feel short in and then be able to move on, then we'll continue to grow and continue to compete and continue to be successful. So it's a good challenge for them. And you know, that's kind of what I left them with at the end of the game is, it's not one or two or three people's fault that we're in the position that we're in. Like, we play a team sport for a reason, and it's everyone's responsibility to, like I said, go back, watch the film, take accountability for what maybe needed to be better and then also focus on how we grow and move on to the next thing. So I'm excited, for a quote, unquote bounce back game. We haven't had one of those yet this season, so just looking forward to how the group responds and being able to go back home on Thursday night."
