Lahner Breaks Mile School Record in DeLoss Dodds Invitational Day Two
Jan 31, 2026 | Track & Field
After two days of competition the Wildcats had significant performances both on the track and in the field events
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Junior Vienna Lahner broke the women's mile school record, which stood since 1983, on Saturday (January 31) during the second day of the DeLoss Dodds Invitational at Cliff Rovelto Indoor Track.
Lahner, a native of Spring Hill, Kan., ran 4:38.84 in the invite race for a six second personal best. She surpasses Deb Pihl's time of 4:39.06 and becomes the fastest Wildcat to enter the top-10 since 2023.
"I just felt like I was in a really good place for it," Lahner said. "And I just feel like my coaches had me really capable and set up for this. And so, I wasn't really scared going through it, and then I knew exactly what I needed that last lap, and I watched the time go up, and I was like, yeah, we did it."
Two more World Athletics Bronze events took place at K-State's home track, the men's and women's triple jump, with two Wildcats finishing 2nd and 3rd in the men's competition. Sophomore Selva Prabhu had a personal best by five inches at 16.63m (54' 6.75") as runner-up while junior Trevon Hamer leaped just six inches shy of that at 16.47m (54' 0.5"). The two still hold the no. 2 and no. 3 best jumps in the K-State indoor records.
Finishing up the final three events in the men's heptathlon, redshirt freshman Dorian Charles finished 3rd overall with 5,635 points, the no. 10 performance in the K-State school records. In the final three events on Saturday, he won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.03 seconds. During the day one events he also won the shot put with a throw of 13.30m (43' 7.75").
Fellow freshman Mattix DaCunha finished just 170 points behind in the heptathlon in 6th place with 5,464 points. His best finish of the day on Saturday was also the 60-meter hurdles in 8.20 seconds in 3rd place. During the seven events, he had one win on day one in the 60-meter dash in 6.87 seconds.
Two more freshmen had top performances, in the women's triple jump, Destini Smith won with a leap of 12.86m while Heath Grant ran in the 400 meters invite race, finishing 3rd in 46.58 seconds, the no. 6 fastest time in the K-State indoor records.
Two middle distance runners crossed the finish line for 1st place, junior Angi Pondler in the women's 600 yards ran a time of 1:20.56, a personal best of five seconds, now the no. 7 fastest time in school records. In the men's 1,000 meters, senior Oskars Bambals won at 2:23.87, which was one-hundredth of a second from his personal best.
The Wildcats will compete on the road for the first time on February 13-14 in the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
FROM THE TRACK
Head Coach Travis Geopfert
On Vienna Lahner's record breaking mile…
"Vienna broke our school record in the mile. Deb Torneden had the mile record, she still works here in our athletics department, Deb's an awesome person and is the biggest fan of all of our runners, but the biggest fan of that mile record being broken. It was in 1983 that it was set, and a special record, Deb was here to see it, Vienna competed so well. And anytime you break a record at a historic program like K-State, it's a big deal."
On the success of the jumpers including Tah Chikomba in the long jump…
"A bunch of top 10 all-time performers, again, on our Kansas State list, super proud of all the efforts across the board there. The jumpers did a great job, Tah Chikomba is number two in the NCAA, number five in the world in the long jump right now, number two on our all-time list."
Junior Vienna Lahner
On Deb Pihl being in attendance to watch Lahner break her record…
"Deb's [Pihl-Torneden] been super, super supportive with it the whole last year. Like, she's been talking me up, trying to get me to get there and break her record, which has been really special. My coaches have been amazing with all of it, Steph [Brokaw] and Trey [Brokaw] have both been really helpful. Yeah, I mean, it's awesome, I feel like this has been something that they keep telling me I'm capable of and like, you know, you believe it, when everyone feels that way, so it's been really nice."
