K-State Makes Big 12 Soccer Debut at Texas Tech
Sep 22, 2017 | Soccer
LUBBOCK, Texas – It took just under three years since the announcement of the K-State soccer program, but on Friday night at Texas Tech's John Walker Soccer Complex Kansas State became an official soccer-playing member of the Big 12 Conference. The Red Raiders defended its home field with a 3-1 win in the league opener for both teams.
"We played a good team tonight," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini. "They were very athletic at certain positions. Their formation was difficult to deal with at times. They were very technical with the ball. However, I felt like we saw some moments from us offensively and defensively where it gave us some hope that if we continue to build on it we could be very good and very dangerous. You could definitely see tonight we were a little more reactive based on Texas Tech's speed and athleticism. It is just an adjustment we are going to have to make over time."
Kansas State (5-4-1, 0-1-0 Big 12) registered a bit of history on Friday night, as the Wildcats punched in the program's first goal in a Big 12 match. The tally came in the 87th minute, as sophomore forward Katie Cramer held possession on the right wing and eventually beat a Texas Tech defender. Her cross found sophomore midfielder Ashley Zane, who buried the shot into the top of the net from six yards out.
"I just saw the run coming and gave it my all," said Zane about the goal. "It was the last three minutes of the game and I knew it was coming into the box so I sprinted there. I knew whatever was going to happen, I was going to at least be there. Katie had a great ball and it just came to my feet. I just had to win it from the defender and kick it in."
The goal was Zane's first of the season and second of her career, while Cramer carded her second assist of the season and improved her point total for the season to four. In the program's debut match at Saint Louis last season, Cramer scored the program's first goal.
Dibbini was pleased with the contributions of several players on Friday night.
"It is always good to get a goal, especially from somebody that comes off the bench and changes the game and gives us a spark the way Ashley Zane and Katie Cramer did there on that play. Abby Sieperda did a nice job tonight of holding the ball and making something happen for us. Our offensive depth is pretty good. Our defense is solid. We need to look at this game overall and be prepared for our next one."
Texas Tech (8-2-0, 1-0-0) struck first with the benefit of a 20 mile per hour wind at their backs in the first half. The Red Raiders quickly shifted possession from the right side of the field in the 14th minute to the middle and found a wide open Jordie Harr. Harr gathered and struck a knuckling shot towards the net, which dipped under K-State goalkeeper Miranda Larkin's outstretched glove.
This was the first goal allowed by K-State in the first 15 minutes of a match this season.
K-State was able to keep Texas Tech off the scoreboard for the remainder of the half, despite outshooting the Wildcats 14-2. Larkin made six saves in the first half, which marked her season-high for any half this season.
The Red Raiders increased their lead to 2-0 in the 62nd minute. Harr figured into the scoring again, as she chipped a pass from the top left of the 18-yard box towards the K-State net. Texas Tech's Ally Griffin sailed in and deflected the ball into the net for the eventual game-winning goal.
Texas Tech added an insurance goal in the 81st minute. Kristen Davis carried possession into K-State's 18-yard box. She then curled off a left-footed shot that just snuck into the far post.
For the night, Texas Tech finished with 28 total shots and 14 on goal. K-State mustered five shots and two on frame. Larkin pocketed a school record 11 saves.
Kansas State will wrap up its first Big 12 weekend on Sunday, as the Wildcats travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to face TCU. Match time on Sunday is 1 p.m. The match can be seen on FOX Sports Southwest Plus and streamed on the FOX Sports Go app. The audio of Sunday's match will be available on 101.5 KROCK in Manhattan and for free at kstatesports.com.
