K-State Secures Season-Opening Win Over Saint Louis

Aug 17, 2018 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State received a stonewall effort from new goalkeeper Emma Malsy and the Wildcats pocketed a second half goal by senior midfielder Morgan Mauck to register the first season-opening win in program history on Friday night, as K-State defeated Saint Louis, 1-0, at the K-State Soccer Complex.

Malsy made her first career K-State (1-0-0) start between the pipes and her first since starting for Arizona State on Oct. 23, 2016 at Oregon. The product of Westminster, California, recorded four saves on the night. Malsy was threatened midway through the first half with a line drive shot from distance by the Billikens, but she was able to push the ball off the crossbar and away from danger.

This was the first win for Malsy since Oct. 6, 2016 at Washington, as a member of the Sun Devils. She improves her overall collegiate record to 4-4-1.

In a rematch of the first match in K-State history, Saint Louis came out with a strong offensive showing and registered an 8-2 edge in total shots. Kansas State dominated the offensive end of the field in the second half with a 7-3 advantage in total shots.

The offensive pressure paid off, as K-State was awarded a corner kick in the 82nd minute. After the initial attack was deflected out of the 18-yard box, K-State's Avery Green sent a header toward the Saint Louis net. The bouncing ball found the foot of Mauck from seven yards out. Mauck was able to tap the ball past Saint Louis goalkeeper Olivia Silverman for the only goal of the night.

The goal by Mauck was her first of the season and the fourth of her K-State career. The Overland Park, Kansas, native, finished the 2017 season with two goals with her last coming on Sept. 8 against Central Arkansas. This was her second career game-winning goal.

Green notched her first career assist and her first point since scoring a goal at Oklahoma State on Oct. 20.

Overall, Saint Louis (0-1-0) finished with an 11-9 edge in total shots but K-State had the advantage in shots on goal, 7-4. The Billikens registered a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Kansas State will conclude the opening weekend on Sunday at 12 p.m., against Oakland. Sunday's match is Sunday Family Day and will feature a free postgame youth clinic and team autographs on the field. A $38 Family 4-Pack is available for the match, which includes four general admission tickets and four $10 concessions vouchers. For tickets, contact the K-State Athletics Ticket Office at (800) 221-CATS or purchase in person at the gate to the K-State Soccer Complex.

What They Said
Head Coach Mike Dibbini

On second half adjustments…
"We have a difficult time coming out of the gates. We tend to try and feel teams out. It is a mindset thing that has to be fixed. Once the game gets settled down we start playing the way we should be playing. We are a second half team. I am trying to get us to play two halves like we did in the second half."

On Morgan Mauck's game winning goal…
"It was a set play. We worked on it all week. Mauck was assigned to frame the goal, which means on set pieces she goes straight to the goalkeeper to get the second ball. She was very coachable she got to the goal and put it in for us."

Redshirt sophomore Goalkeeper Emma Malsy
On sealing the corner during her saves…
"That is definitely something we have worked on a lot this week in training. Especially with our goalkeepers. Working on the cut-back ball and making sure we are getting across the goal and making that big save for the team. I definitely think that is something that paid off from practice."

On second half defensive adjustments…
"I think our mentality is what changed. At halftime we had talked about really trying to step on their throats more and scoring a lot and not just sitting back. Really taking our destiny on the field in our own hands."

Senior Midfielder Morgan Mauck
On the game-winning goal…
"I was so excited. We worked on that during scouting. I knew I needed to use my body. Frame the goalie and finish balls that bounced in front of me. I just saw the ball bouncing in the box. I knew I had to get to it at all costs to get it into the goal. I was so close and I just finished it."

On offensive attack in the second half…
"We got more organized. Our problem in the first half is we were not on the same page. Once we got organized we had more chances going forward."

On big win…
"It is awesome for our confidence. We know we can do it. To finally get the result on paper is a great feeling."

Saint Louis Head Coach Katie Shields
On K-State's improvement since playing in 2016…
"They (K-State) were great. They competed, they out competed us at the end of the day. Growth from their end. Mike (Dibbini) has done a great job with the program. We let them hang around in the game and eventually they just got momentum. Their belief is strong, congratulations to them."
