K-State Pours on Goals in Win Over Oakland

Aug 19, 2018 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Playing in a heavy rain throughout the match on Sunday, Kansas State soccer didn't allow the conditions to dictate the final as the Wildcats blanked Oakland at the K-State Soccer Complex, 4-0. The win marks the first time in program history that K-State has concluded the opening weekend with a 2-0-0 record.

Kansas State controlled the ball throughout most of the first half, generating a 15-0 advantage in total shots in the opening 45 minutes. This was the first time in program history K-State held an opponent without a shot attempt in the first half of a match.

The Wildcats broke through for its first goal of the afternoon in the 32nd minute. The seventh corner kick of the first half for K-State was taken by from Aly Rocha from the right of the Oakland net. Rocha sent her kick into the six-yard box and found the head of Avery Green. Green's shot toward the right post was saved by an Oakland defender.

The resulting carom found the foot of freshman forward Chloe Fisher 16 yards from the net. Fisher gathered the ball and sent her shot skipping across the wet turf. Her shot went through the traffic in front of the frame and found the back of the net in the lower left corner.

K-State broke open the match in the 53rd minute on a long pass between sophomores Brookelynn Entz and Hannah Davis. Entz sent a long pass from just beyond midfield to a streaking Davis to the top of the Oakland 18-yard box. Davis gathered the ball and beat the Golden Grizzlies goalkeeper on the right side of the field from eight yards away.

The goal was the first of the season for Davis and the third of her career. The assist was the first of the season for Entz and the second of her career.

The Wildcats added an insurance goal in the 61st minute. Junior forward Katie Cramer took a breakaway opportunity, driving just over 35 yards from the Oakland net. Cramer put the ball through an oncoming Oakland defender's legs and continued her dash to the frame. The product of Goddard, Kansas, was able to avoid the Golden Grizzlies goalkeeper with a subtle chip and finished off the play by tapping the ball in from three yards.

The goal was Cramer's first of the season and third of her career. It was her first goal since Sept. 17, 2017, against Colorado State.

Cramer also added an assist to her final stat line on Sunday, as she aided sophomore forward Christina Baxter on her goal in the 76th minute. Cramer found a charging Baxter, who was able to send the ball over the Oakland goal keeper from the top of the 18-yard box for K-State's fourth and final goal on the afternoon.

Baxter finished the afternoon with a career-high five total shots including a career-best three on goal. This was her first goal of the season and the second of her career. The assist by Cramer was the fourth of her career and first in 2018.

K-State goalkeeper Emma Malsy recorded her second shutout of the weekend. Malsy registered two saves on the afternoon, both in the second half. Malsy is the first K-State goalkeeper to register a pair of shutouts in the opening weekend of a season.

Overall, Kansas State tied the school record with 13 shots on goal. The Wildcats outshot Oakland, 27-4. K-State tallied nine corner kicks on the afternoon and did not allow an Oakland corner kick attempt.

What They Said

K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini
On the play of the team...
"The ladies played hard. They deserve it. They brought the energy, the effort, the attitude, the aggressiveness. We came out the first half and brought the urgency, we only came up with one and I was a little bit worried because that's the type of team you want to separate yourself from, but once we got the second one the gates opened for us and we just kept building confidence."

On the offense...
"We just have so many types of forwards that I can rotate in depending on what the game dictates. They're all deceptive and all play differently that would help and allow us to throw different types of looks at teams. It allows us to go at them in numbers."

On what he told the team about the conditions of the game...
"I told them if the score is 0 - 0 and they call the game for lightning by half, the game stays at a 0 - 0 score, so we have to get out of the gates fast. This type of game in this weather is equalizing for both teams, you don't know what's going to happen, it is unpredictable."

Freshman Forward Chloe Fisher
On her goal...
"If I'm seeing everyone is going in I try to hold off, there's always a chance [the ball] will bubble off someone and today was my day, [the ball] bubbled off and I was in the right position at the right time."

On beginning the season out with two wins...
"It feels great. Now that we've come in and set our standards high, we have to keep that standard high for the rest of our season."

"Lots of confidence, especially from last season not doing so well, the main thing was to get a good start on this season and go on from it. I think we started the best way possible, especially with no goals scored against us today and a one - nil the other day, this is a great boost and we can only go farther now."

Junior Forward Katie Cramer
On her goal...
"I was penetrating and didn't see any runners open, so I made my way through the defense and just kept going. I honestly didn't think I was going to get to it but that's why you need to keep going always and put it in the back of the net at all costs."

On attacking early and often...
"We were all making our runs and all doing our jobs and when you have that kind of high energy and people are out there playing for everybody else that makes a big difference and just opens up a lot of opportunities."

On back line sending balls forward early compared to Friday's game...
"I think what changed was our movement and confidence. No girl had any doubt they could get by any defender, they wanted the ball more, I think it was a mindset thing."

On this team compared to last year...
"We've made great strides, we have our own way of playing. Last year, it was a lot of conforming to how other teams play. This year we have our own swag."

On feeding off each other...
"We weren't out there playing individually, we were willing to make the extra pass to get more goals. That says how much more of a team we are than last year, that's exciting."
