K-State Falls in Big 12 Opener Against (15) Oklahoma State

Sep 21, 2018 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – A pair of early second half goals by 15th-ranked Oklahoma State on Friday night at the K-State Soccer Complex provided the margin, 3-1, for the Cowgirls to hold back K-State in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

Kansas State (4-4-2, 0-1-0 Big 12) held the potent Oklahoma State (9-1-0, 1-0-0) offense scoreless in the first half. The Cowgirls held a 9-4 edge in total shots, but K-State goalkeeper Emma Malsy made the save on five of the on goal attempts in opening stanza. Malsy finished the night with eight saves.

The Wildcats nearly broke through first in the early stages of the second half. Sophomore Hannah Davis gathered a poor clearance from Oklahoma State 22 yards from the goal. With one dribble, Davis fired a rocket of a shot from the right side of the field. Her ball just sailed past the left upper corner and nestled on top of the netting.

Shortly after Davis's shot, Oklahoma State punched in the first goal of the night. In the 53rd minute, Claire Gantzer found Jaci Jones at the top of the K-State 18-yard box in the center of the field. Jones blasted a shot that deflected off a K-State defender and found the right side of the goal.

The Cowgirls tagged on an insurance goal in the 54th minute, as Marlo Zoller scored her fifth goal of the season on a combination play off a free kick. Jones found Zoller in the box from 16 yards.

In the 71st minute, Oklahoma State added on a third goal with a header from Julia Lenhardt on a Taylor Olson corner kick.

K-State avoided the shutout in the 87th minute. Junior Laramie Hall hustled a ball into the Oklahoma State 18-yard box and sent a cross from the right side. The ball found the right hip of senior Haley Sutter, who deflected in the pass for her first goal of the season and the third of her K-State career.

Oklahoma State held a narrow lead in total shots on the night, 21-18, as K-State outshot the Cowgirls, 14-12, in the second half. The Cowgirls tallied an 11-6 edge in shots on goal and a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.

What They Said

K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini

On the difference between the first and second half…
"First half we stuck to the game plan. We did a good job of neutralizing their attack and tried to deny them corner kicks because I knew that was their specialty. Unfortunately in the second half they capitalized on a couple set pieces and then a deflected goal that was the backbreaker. I thought we played really well tonight and competed at a high level. We just had some bad luck in terms of the key moments of the game. I saw a lot of positives tonight. Top to bottom, everybody that came in did some nice things. We just dug ourselves a hole."

On giving up two goals in 90 seconds…
"We have to put this one behind us. The short-term memory has to be there because we have another big game on Sunday. There is really not much to think about because that was a good team and you can tell by their experience. In these moments they have that experience to finish off games. We just have to learn from today, as we go forward, and stay sharp, focused and engaged one v one for the 90 minutes."

On their urgency…
"There was a little bit of a spell there where we kind of lost the urgency but we picked it back up once we brought some players in to spark it again. Once we found some momentum in the attack we did some nice combination plays to break them down. We were just trying to figure out ways to keep battling through that game."

On where he wants to improve going forward…
"Defending set pieces in key moments of the game. Not only the first ball but the second ball. Just be more engaged in that area. And then executing our chances that we get in the game because you are not going to get many at this level in the Big 12. Once you do get those we have to be better at executing those chances."

On Emma Malsy
"She understands that this game has to be behind us and that she has to have a short-term memory. It is difficult but she is experienced enough and she understands that so we feel confident she will be ready to go on Sunday."

On bouncing back Sunday…
"I think that is the thing that we have always been concerned about. Being a little bit younger and not having many upperclassmen, how can a team respond to big games like today? I think that is an area that we keep preaching to be better at and our leadership has done a nice job of stepping up."

Senior Defender Haley Sutter
On her goal…
"I feel like we played with a lot of urgency at the end. We were down by three goals so we kind of had nothing to lose. We got it up, Laramie [Hall] made a great cross and I was lucky to be there to finish."

On giving up the first goal…
"I felt like we were still in it. That is what happens in soccer. You get scored on. It is how you rebound and unfortunately it was just unlucky. It was just hard for us to get back into it after that."

On responding after being down 3-0…
"I feel like your first instinct is to feel down but I think we did a good job of trying to keep the tempo up. They are a good team so they punished us. We have a lot to learn from this game."

On where she wants the team to improve…
"Staying disciplined. We are in the Big 12 and it is a good conference. You cannot switch off. You have to be on. Also, how we can execute and get the ball into the back of the net."

Redshirt Sophomore Goalkeeper Emma Malsy
On the game…
"When you are in the Big 12 teams are going to capitalize on those key moments. Those are key moments and they are few to come by and when you give them up they are going to capitalize on them. I think that is definitely what they did so kudos to them. I think that is kind of our takeaway coming into Sunday's game. We are going to really focus on that next time. That is something we are going to hit teams hard with because we cannot let this happen again. This is not K-State soccer. We bounce back."

On giving up three goals tonight…
"They were very similar to Indiana who we played earlier in the season. Very physical team, very crafty on the ball, very quick combinations off the ball. When you are in conference there is a huge shift in mentality and I think it is something that we need to catch up on a little bit. Sunday is a great opportunity to show what we are made of. Coming off a 3-1 loss people are going to be expecting us to be down but I think this is where we show teams what we are made of and who we are as K-State soccer."

On the biggest change from the first half to the second half...
"They were going to press us harder because we kind of showed them in the first half that we could hang. I think that is where they wanted to come and hit us hard. Coming out really hard and making sure that they were challenging a little bit more and sitting a little bit higher, as far as their offensive line. On our side, I think we had a little bit more urgency getting towards the goal, especially towards the end of the game. We had a lot of opportunities. The goal was really good for us and a really good takeaway."

On whether she wants to use this game as motivation…
"Definitely as motivation because people are going to be looking to me like I have had a lot of shutouts and obviously this is a hard loss for me. I think this fuels my fire going forward. I am ready to go for Sunday. I want redemption. This does not define me by any means and I want to show people that I can bounce back."

Oklahoma State Head Coach Colin Carmichael

On not scoring in the first half…
"There was a little five, ten-minute spell in the second half that turned the game. It was tight, you go on the road in the Big 12 and it is always difficult. Kansas State is a good team, I think they're a better team now than they were last year, to be honest. I thought we played well in the first half without being super dangerous but in the second half we were able to get some more looks at goal. All in all, a good win."

On the Cowgirls' defense...
"Our defense was really good. Towards the end we pushed a lot of numbers forward and scored some nice goals and created a few looks. I thought for the first 70/80 minutes that we did a really nice job eliminating their chances, so that was really pleasing for us. I thought we played well. Like I said, when you go on the road anywhere in the Big 12 and you open with a win we definitely take a lot of confidence from that."

On getting two of their goal points from set pieces...
"Don't care where they come from, we will take them whatever way. A set play or running play. We work on the set plays. We talk about them and show our kids videos of them and they've done a good job of executing them."
