K-State, Weichel Set Assist Records as K-State Triumphs

Aug 27, 2021 | Soccer

CLARKSVILLE, Tennessee – A pair of early goals and school records for assists by a team and a player in a single match helped K-State secure a 5-0 win at Austin Peay on Friday night at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field. The five goals by the Wildcats were the second-most scored in a match in the history of the program.

"As far as our performance on offense we played very solid," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini about the second straight win. "There's good momentum right now and it gives us good confidence, however, I still don't think we're not even close to reaching our full potential and that's the scary part of this team. If they continue to believe and work hard together, the sky's the limit."

K-State (2-1-0) dished out a school record six assists, surpassing the previous mark of four. The 16 total points by the Wildcats set the school record for points in a single match, which was previously 15 at Oakland on August 26, 2016.

With her three assists, Maddie Weichel set the school record for assists in a match. She also moved into a tie for fourth for assists in a single-season and boosted her career total to five, which ranks sixth in school history for career assists.

"They did a really nice job of communicating, from the beginning of the game," said Dibbini about the passing of his team which resulted. "You can tell that between the lines that the relationships are starting to get stronger. It was pretty evident. The runs were strong. There was good balance in the attack, which is fun to watch."

For the second straight match, K-State scored in the seventh minute off a corner kick. Sophomore Maddie Weichel delivered her attempt perfectly into the middle of the 18-yard box. Junior Jesse Loren put her forehead on the ball and sent it into the back of the net before the Austin Peay goalkeeper could react.

"It's great that we're executing on set pieces," said Dibbini about the two straight game-winning goals off corner kicks. "We have some good height and size in the box. We're keeping it very, very simple and right now that's all it takes."

The goal was the third collegiate goal of Loren's career and her first as a member of the Wildcats.

Two minutes later, the Wildcats put in its second goal. Maddie Weichel played the distributor again, as she found Brookelynn Entz wide open in the middle of the field. After two dribbles, Entz unleashed a blistering shot to the upper right corner from the top of the box.

This was the first goal of the season for Entz and the 18th of her career. She is the first Wildcat to score a goal in five straight seasons.

Early in the second half, sophomore Porter List showcased her speed and agility. List won a foot race to the end line to save a long pass. List tight-roped the end line and danced around two defenders to find Marisa Weichel wide-open in front of the net for the easy tap in goal and a 3-0 K-State lead.

The goal was the second of the season for Marisa Weichel. She is the first Wildcat to score in consecutive matches since Entz on Oct. 25 and Oct. 30 of the 2020 season.

K-State's fourth goal came in the 58th minute. Maddie Weichel delivered a long cross to the far-right post. Awaiting the ball was an unmarked Aliyah El-Naggar, who calmly headed the ball down and into the net. This was El-Naggar's second career K-State goal and her first this season.

The Wildcats capped the night in the 75th minute, as Riley Baker collected a long pass from Emily Crain. Baker found Roo Yarnell-Williams racing into the box, who redirected the pass into the frame for the fifth and final goal of the night.

The five goals were the second-highest single-match total in school history and the most since K-State set the school record of six at Oakland on August 26, 2016.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer made two saves on her way to the third shutout of her career and her first this season.

For the night, K-State held a 23-4 advantage in total shots and a 10-2 lead in shots on goal. The Wildcats also held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

K-State will cap the weekend with the first neutral site match in its history. The Wildcats will face North Alabama (0-1-2) at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. Live stats for Sunday's match can be found at kstatesports.com, with match updates provided on Twitter, @KStateSOC.
